Personality characters that are attractive are also childlike, especially purity culture, whereas it's the opposite for men. Girlhood being valued more than womanhood. Porn websites show pedophilic trends being popular ("barely legal", "schoolgirl", teenage girl"). Social media normalising elaborate skincare routines for increasingly younger audiences, with children using active ingredients that they don't need as they try to mimic adult beauty rituals (my 8yo niece watches makeup videos and does full-on makeup at times).

I can't help but feel like a lot of this is related to male insecurity. A woman with agency is terrifying to many insecure men, so the naivety and "innocence" of child-like aspects in a woman are seen as more appealing and comforting, which manifests both physically (and with makeup and fashion trends) and in personality. Feeling control and superiority over someone or something else is often massively ego stroking for such people.

The older a women gets, the wiser she usually gets to these kinds of mens' bullshit and becomes less tolerant of it, and these men know it.

Absolutely feeds into it. It also forms another part of misogyny where some men don't fully see women as people in the same way they do other men. This ties into viewing women as objects; things to be shown off, have possession of, and gain status from. Which, in turn, also informs beauty standards by virtue of worth being tied to attractiveness, and youth often being held as a prime beauty standard of women by men. To your point, when women aren't viewed as people with complex emotions/thoughts/desires/flaws in the same way men are, then the experience age gives women runs counter to this. Less malleable, less able to be controlled. Here youth also couples with that ability to control. So it's not just about the aesthetics of it, but the way it reinforces both that position of authority and the ways in which insecure men view women as a whole.

It's easy to see this as some moustache twirling villain but these elements seep into everyday misogyny in ways both overt and subtle.

I'll be honest, the intensity of the backlash against that thread is surprising to me. I'm especially scratching my head a bit at all the posts calling it "stalking", now we also have "harassment" and "parasocial". I don't personally think any of those terms are appropriate.



Of course I can't speak for the OP of that thread's true intentions and ultimately if the majority of people here are uncomfortable with the thread (which they clearly are) then I respect it's closure. I'm just not sure how we get from "following public social media posts by people in the entertainment industry" to "stalking and harassment".



Is it specifically because it's LinkdIn? Asking legitimately because I may be ignorant of a social faux paus at play. Is there an unwritten rule that despite being public social media, LinkdIn posts should be off-limits to discuss and share by people outside the industry? Would the reaction to that thread have been different if they were Bluesky or Twitter posts instead?



Full disclosure here I ask partially because I'm confused by all these posts but also partially because I did make one post a few years ago where I used LinkdIn posts as a source for how much staff had left a particular project and I wasn't aware at the time anyone would have considered that stalking or harassment to look at those posts! I don't remember if I posted them directly like OP did, I don't think so, but they were people who had appeared in a Making Of video for the game so I looked their names up. I don't think anyone at the time reacted to my post in this way, though maybe the context being different changes things. Or maybe a bunch of people called me a stalker behind my back! Now I don't know!



I do feel like there's a difference between research and stalking but this may also be one of those things where I'm not fully picking up on what most people would consider normal social behavior. Which does happen sometimes. But I think maybe this conversation would be better served without accusations and hostility or assuming the worst of everyone. People always come in here to complain about how hostile everything is and how everyone assumes the worst and then this exact same thing happens where someone is being called a stalking parasocial harasser. (And from the other side, "silencing developer voices" is also a ridiculous claim).
