I took the niece and nephew to the Harry Potter studio tour today and I can only assume there was a Nazi rally in town because it’s the only explanation for the thousands of people there. Why are they exempt? It's easy to put all the blame on the (admittedly shitty) corporation, they got their role in this don't get me wrong, but the market gave them the signs that the majority care about digital at the expense of physical.



They saw the data, and I hate to say that it is in their favor with this decision.



So yes, I blame Sony, but I also blame all digital buyers in the same breath because convenience over actual ownership. Yay?

Agreed. I think it still sucks and Sony bears responsibility as a big player in the industry, but the market spoke. People here LOVE to parrot "vote with your wallet", and they're even doing it now by saying cancel PS+.



But well, this IS voting with your wallet. The majority of gamers eased into and accepted digital as time went on and now Sony has enough evidence to pull the plug and carry on as usual.



If people wanna reverse course and vote again, sure. But over years and years people continued to buy brand new games digital, knowing they only get a license and Sony can ban them at any time. We'll see if Sony makes thing worse over time, but this is literally what people chose, even if it was shortsighted and they want to take it back now. I think AT BEST Sony will introduce some new features to their store and clean it up. maybe an actual refund system.

This isn’t necessarily a defense of digital purchases. At least I don’t see a point where the next or next-next systems can’t play older software. Well, unless you bought it physical. But it won’t be like you bought a PS4 and can’t play PAIN or The Last Guy or Tokyo Jungle or that one game with water physics that ran at 10 fps.

My reaction on reading the GTA is just a code in a box? Cool. Why? Because Amazon let’s you buy it in instalments. It’s a small thing but it’s convenient. I’m not going to notice 20 a month, but I would notice £100 at Christmas. I’m all for physical media. I never buy it but there should always be the option for customers to buy physical.

I don't think the whole "people will just forget" is going to apply to this news.

People aren't just gonna shrug about a lack of consumer options.

As fucked as it is to say, dev layoffs don't impact the consumers directly. It's absolutely dire news and never should happen, but much the like Xbox One reveal, people will be far more passionately upset about something that impacts them directly in terms of their wallet.

The entire industry will shift towards killing disc. It's inevitable, just like CDs. I don't know anyone that still collects discs. Any friends or family I have just buy digital, and have been doing so since PS4. Rockstar doesn't even want to release GTA6 on disc.
