Hell, suddenly ERA is discussing the same stuff as us and I want to disagree with the usual “capitalism is bad, uh, okay”.

My point is their whole business model is set up to fail in the current market. They can't be taking 5 years to make a game, but they have no other option because their whole studio is built around taking 5 years to make a game.

One moderate failure (like Dark Ages) and that $450 million in REVENUE starts to run short when you're not expecting another sugar hit for 4 more years. 

So, looking at the options, I can see no reason why they wouldn't gut the studio, spin off the engine development and take the valuable IP to a cheaper studio to turn around games in 2-3 years instead of 5-6. It's not like they were still staffed with the same people who made those classic 90s games anyway

I wouldn't be so sure about that, Carmack left nearly 13 years ago. They had rebooted Doom (again) shortly before he left. He didn't have much to do with it or even the id Tech.

It's interesting looking at the credits and the way this kind of news is treated in our modern era of game production. According to the story, id lost ~140 of their 185 people. But nearly 1700 people are credited on The Dark Ages.

As someone at ERA pointed out, is not like Carmack wasn’t making bad business decisions and quixotic engines during the 00’s to say the talent died after he left. I get why they did axed them and I know is not a charity, still feels foolish specially since Microsoft still wants to play the idea of having prestige and that is worthwhile buying their console (who the fuck is going to buy Gears of War on console ).

BTW, may surprise how many old heads from the 90’s still work in the industry or in related studios.
