Any competent narrative professional can tell you why Marie Kondo's model, and by extension the model of the modern game industry, is broken.

Kondo's mantra was "does it bring joy?" Which is precisely the sort of reductive, memorable slogan that's quotable and goes great on tote bags and t-shirts. In practice, however, it becomes a bit more complicated.

The problem word there is "joy". You see, joy has a very specific meaning. Joy carries with it the baggage of a sort of transcendent happiness beyond the everyday. It's an elevated state, but by definition, if it's elevated, it's not sustainable.

Asking something to provide joy constantly is just fast-tracking the burnout of your dopamine receptors. The item may provide joy now, but in a week? A month? A year? When it could and should have settled into a comfortable happiness and familiarity, by Kondo's measure, it should still be burying the needle. That's like asking every day of a fifty year marriage to be as dizzyingly in love as the day the couple met cute, and for all the mythology around romance, real life teaches that there are other valuable gifts to be had after that initial burst of joy.

Narrative folks know this. We know that every scene can't be the most powerful, the loudest, the most impactful. We know that you need to give players time to rest and recover before cranking the volume all the way up. We know that if you hit them with constant crescendo, it becomes white noise and they tune it out. They know can't keep infinitely upping the ante, because sooner or later you run out of places to go. You need moments of joy, yes, but also moments of quiet satisfaction, and recharging and prep. It can't all be adrenaline (or joy) all the time, or it quickly becomes empty.

And that in turn leads to the business model of the industry. Not every quarter can be the best quarter ever. The math doesn't support the line always going up. Sometimes the best approach for long term growth and survival is to hunker down for a quarter or two and invest in content, in technologies, in getting teams ready for the harder road ahead. It can't always be nothing but joy, even for investors who don't play games and want massive returns right now. Doing that through cuts, through aggressive resource extraction, through impossible targets means that sooner or later the system will burn out and there will be nothing but a feeble scrambling for a more that cannot exist.

Joy is great. But it's not everything, and it never could be. Let that be a lesson to all of us, courtesy of your friends in narrative.

Talking about a youtube video like someone is wasting your time by forcing you to spend 45 minutes watching it and they should be given warnings (which contribute to bans) because they didn't undermine the video by summarizing it for you is absolutely ridiculous. I don't know if this is just me, but I've been doing some thinking and I've started to realize that I have a really bad habit of purchasing remasters of classic games, including games I loved when they were new, and then playing them for a few hours before I just drift off. This was prompted by my experience with Star Ocean: The Second Story R, which I bought at launch, thought was a perfectly competent and even good remaster, only to play it for 10-12 hours and then drop it for a year for no particular reason, until one of my friends picked the game up and it prompted me to continue playing it again so we would be able to talk about it as he progressed.

Looking back, I can see a graveyard of other remasters and rereleases of games I've purchased and played for a few hours before moving on. My mental perspective seems to be that when I play a remaster of a game, especially one I've played extensively in the past, I just wind up playing them until my brain goes "ok, I've seen enough, they didn't fuck it up" and then I stop, because my memories of the original game are usually strong enough that I don't need to see the rest. This is especially common for me with remasters of RPGs and longer games, where it's hard for me to commit the time to play through a whole game I've already finished (sometimes multiple times, in the case of SNES and PS1 RPGs) while other modern things are competing for my time.

Is anyone else like this? Speak up and share how you tend to approach rereleases of old games you're already deeply experienced with.

There are plenty of non-white actors in Rings of Power and it doesn't seem to matter much at all there.

Specifically for Doom, the game had good marketing, starting from the very well received demo trailer. Fans started expressing concern from the previews.

I'm a fan, plenty of us were expressing concerns from reveal. A lot of previews and trailers were like "well we hope it works out". Some liked it, some hated it. It ended up getting bad WOM which is one of the reasons for why it underperformed (as well as price, barrier of entry, and yes being available on a sub)

In the case of Doom TDA, no it cannot be Gamepass. Advertising Gamepass does nothing to dissuade buyers on other platforms.

Oh Pryme, I really do appreciate how fervent you are in these threads. But I would appreciate if you read people correctly and not jump the gun. No one is saying gamepass is solely responsible for the issues Dark Ages had selling but it absolutely is a part of the issues the game faced having to sell. Hell you yourself, right here, say it shouldn't dissuade buyers on other platforms. Glad you can agree it's one of the problems dark ages had selling overall.
