Quote:Historian Philip Wayne Powell argued that the Black Legend was still active in modern history, and plays an active role in shaping Latin America–United States relations. His book provides examples of what he viewed as divergent treatment of Spain and other powers, and illustrates how this allows for a double narrative that taints Americans' view of Hispanic America as a whole:
Spaniards who came to the New World seeking opportunities beyond the prospects of their European environment, are contemptuously called cruel and greedy "goldseekers," or other opprobrious epithets virtually synonymous with "Devils"; but Englishmen who sought New World opportunities are more respectfully called "colonists," or "homebuilders," or "seekers after liberty." ...
— Tree of Hate (2008 edition), page 11
But, I mean, this is largely true? The whole point of the Spanish Empire was extraction for the state in the name of the monarch, the English/Dutch more had this sense of that they were pulling a fast one on dummies who were willing to go suffer just to own land and were largely ignored by the home state. The French were this weird hybrid.
The English colonies were rather famously a drag on the state, especially because of the lack of customs. This led to a whole thing at one point.
Not to mention the centralization. Nobody in the Spanish New World could have fucked off and started their own colony with blackjack and hookers like led to Rhode Island.

Heteroromantic refers to a person who experiences romantic attraction exclusively toward individuals of a different or opposite gender.
Ace refers to a person who doesn't get laid.
Hope this helps.

That was early 2020. She was married by the end of the following year. I have not had a single date. Being a man seeking a woman on the modern dating scene is a terrible curse.
I am also a heteroromantic asexual, and I will not marry unless I can be a homemaker, as I have dreamt of being since childhood. Finding a woman both able and willing to be the sole breadwinner is rather challenging.
And so, I gave up on actively pursuing romance late last year. I am not unhappy. I am a man of many passions, and life is good more often than bad for me. I probably will try again, just not this year at a minimum.

In fact, the only hard part is other people not understanding it. I was brought up to be polite, inquisitive, and charming irl (so, not like I am here lol) , so getting on with new people has always been really easy, and them wanting to be around me is pretty common. I just find it all so exhausting and have shut off multiple relationships in my past due to it, and it's not fair to them at all and entirely not their fault. So I try very carefully to not put myself in that position anymore to avoid causing hurt, and I've been way happier for not having to worry about it.

The "average person" is not giving it a 5.1 after leaving the theater. They are giving it an A, as shown by the CinemaScore reveal. CinemaScore has been around for decades and actually polls people after leaving a film.

Quote:I’ve got a piece coming out soon in a magazine on what fiction writers can learn from game writers, and yes, I am quite serious. I like to think I’m reasonably well positioned to speak on the topic, seeing as I am A) a game writer and B) a fiction writer, and have had at least some small success in each arena. (Yes, Publishers Weekly starred review for Firefly Rain, I cling to you still.)
The reaction I get when I mention this to a lot of people, though, is a snort of disbelief. What can game writers possibly have to offer fiction authors? After all, games are new and young and weird, while fiction is an ancient and honorable and esteemed craft that has been honed in MA programs and expensive workshops over centuries. There are also those whose reaction is less knee-jerk and more thoughtful, but largely as negative. They point out that I like to point out that there is a fundamental difference between writing fiction (and linear media) and writing games, namely interactivity. For a writer, interactivity means surrendering absolute control of what is being written to the player, and instead writing in a way that is predictive and reactive around the player-shaped hole the true hero of the narrative inhabits. How can that gap possibly be bridged from the other side?
To the former, I say “neener neener neener.” This argument functionally privileges fiction over game writing, which is poppycock. This sort of thinking is informed by notions like “The writing in the latest FPS isn’t up to Herman Melville’s standards”, and we can all see through that. There is great fiction writing. There is also great games writing that packs emotional wallops and shows superb craft. There is also terrible fiction writing, which partially explains why I am liquidating 5% of my book collection, along with that bad game writing, and to say that writing is better just because it comes in a different format is to say that you have never read, say, Guy N. Smith’s legendary giant killer crabs series of horror novels.
The meatier argument seems harder to counter, but it’s flawed because it’s absolutist. No, skills are not 100% transferrable between media, but they never have been. But, /some/ things game writers have learned as they have developed their own craft can be picked up, tweaked, and made useful in older but still evolving forms. I’m not going to give away what’s in the piece, but there are numerous smaller but important areas where the strictures of game writing have forced the development of approaches that can then be gifted to writers in other forms. It’s not all or nothing, but it’s definitely something, and if nothing else, I know my writing is the better for it.
