Ya know, I never believed that violent video games lead to violent people mostly because the violence in video games is dramatized to a degree in most cases to separate it from reality and because violence in our society is so rightfully stigmatized.

However. I do think there is something to stories like this and the rise of gooner video games especially in the f2p space where younger more impressionable people are consuming content 16 hours a day on their phones. Is it a chicken or the egg situation? I'm not sure.

Nah you are definitely onto something. But it's more about platforms like Twitch and others that incentivize these people to do this and build a following for this in the first place. The problem is not video games, even though video games could be the catalyst for getting into bad online behavior. Theres a lot of throughlines with these kind of anti-social misogynistic manosphere types and online gamer communities.

Yeah I think there are more avenues than ever for people to fall into these spaces in the always online world. It's just a bummer that video games have become one of those spaces where people can fall into a rabbit hole of misogyny. Like sure, you could argue that games have always flaunted sex appeal, but the rise of gacha games where you can pour thousands of dollars into waifus literally puts the 'object' in objectification. Combine this with modern social media providing havens for this sort of anti-social incel behavior to fester and that's one path to how we get here.

The truth of the matter is the puritanical arguments from Jack Thompson being all people ever engaged aith, gaming and tech culture's almost sycophantic resistance to any type of regulation or criticism of the space, has turned a blind eye to the many inequities and fundamental Boy Culture that has not only centralized a lot of the worst male impulses, but excused them for a long time. Many of us grew up on the Wild Wild West of the Internet where it was very much a Boys Club, and mistreatment of women (and women sensibilities) was endemic to almost all corners of gaming culture during its formative age.

I think now with the benefit of hindsight we can say that we didn't fairly engage with the criticisms of the day, and it was a disservice to the overall health of the industry, alongside our collective fealty to tech products and ubiquitous phone use.

Yeah... If you look at the 2000 and 2010s there definitely was this edgelord vibe in the games industry of "we need to push the medium to be as dark and gritty as possible to be taken seriously instead of just thought of just children's toys."

But instead of looking at how we can be taken more seriously as an artistic medium, games just indulged in more sex and violence as a means to be "mature". Fast forward a decade and we have games like stellar blade being celebrated as a mainstream product on the Sony event and we collectively barely blink an eye.

Notice how all three of these fucking idiots fail to address a crucial footnote in the story: the serial ejaculator was motivated by onlyfans content, and posted content onto his own onlyfans. So even if we abide by their "sexual media causes people to do this" implication, it would 100% be on pornography/onlyfans content, and not fucking video games.

This should tell us that anyone who identifies as a gooner deserves suspicion at least. Gooning is an unhealthy activity, it's not just masturbating, or edging, and it leads to dehumanisation of women mainly.
