Being honest, I think it's absurd the way some people here have spoken about Oliver as if he's an irredeemably awful person, because he said a couple of mildly positive things about AI,

I lisitened to the podcast weekly for 2+ years and couldn't recall a single instance of Oliver ever acknowledging the ecological and human cost of AI unprompted. But boy did he have a lot of praise for it.

And the DF team have talked about the people affected in the gaming industry and elsewhere thousands of times. In particular in the last couple years with so much consolidation and studio closures. It's never been some raw "tech only" talk. But Oliver at least occasionally acknlowedging the already massive, negativei consequences? The rarest of sights to be seen.

It culminated with the DLSS5 video where Rich and him made some of the poorest tech analysis we've ever seen from DF, later doubling and trippling down while still downplaying the cost of AI.

Honestly, Oliver completely put me off on watching any DF content that includes him.

The DF Q&A video after the reveal and reading his takes on AI around the internet completely showed me type of AI accepting person they are. They think they're level headed with their reasoning.

Sorry but any level acceptance of any form of genAI with what resources and human cost and complete destruction of artistic integrity it is being built upon on is unacceptable.

I have a very close friend of 18 years who's now essentially married with two kids. A few years back, he moved out of state for his wife, which obviously meant we couldn't hang out the way we used to. Before that, we'd always made time to hang, even single, even in relationships, even living in different situations, we still hung out all the time.



Honestly, his move caught me off guard. It felt like a quarter-life crisis decision. He settled down fast with someone none of us in the friend group had ever heard about, and ended up having two kids with her. She's fine, honestly. She's a homebody without much of a social circle of her own, and we get along well whenever we're around each other. No issues there.



Eventually, they moved back to my state, mainly because they weren't getting support from her side of the family and wanted to be closer to his. Having my buddy back nearby was exciting. He told me things would go back to how they used to be. I didn't believe it as I'm not naive enough to expect things to be exactly the same when you have wife and kids.



Instead, it feels like every time I reach out(once a week or once every two weeks) just a casual "hey bro";he never has time. His texts feel short and a little cold, like I'm becoming an annoyance. Even on calls, if I bring up doing something we used to always do together, he seems to find an excuse to dodge it. So we end up doing nothing.



I don't want to be the guy who's desperately chasing a friendship the other person doesn't have time or interest in anymore. Just needed to vent a little, I guess. Probably just need to get back into a relationship myself if only that were as simple as it sounds. Luckily, I do have some other friends I can hang with, but he's probably one of my closest ones which is why it sucks.

As a married dad of two kids, I'm the one reaching out to single or non-parental friends to hang out cause I need a social life outside of my family at times and to engage with my hobbies like the cinema, hiking, or exploring. I have some friends who do reciprocate and the mutual interest is there, thankfully. But I feel your pain.

Friendships are harder to maintain than romantic relationships.

To be clear, the thread title is supposed to be a joke, actual conversations and acknowledging of the ethics/human cost regarding the use of AI in the games industry is the only actual thing that would represent some kind of "redemption" regarding Rich and Oliver's comments on AI.
