Absolute clown. There’s a certain brand of wannabe intellectual that thrives in places like Era that this dude is the perfect example of.

“Well I don’t know anything about what I talk about but I do know that it was whiteys fault.” Like Wahhabism was a CIA psyop.

Also pretty fucking offensive to take away any and all agency of people that actually live in the region.

Wishing a return to empire and imperialism is good actually...but only if you're Muslim.

Standard press junket key messages/taking points for super hero movies:
  • "Oh yeah, I absolutely loved [insert character here] comics as a kid growing up. It inspired me to become an actor."
  • "Playing a female super hero is something I always wanted to do so I could inspire little girls that they can be anything they want when they grow up."
  • "I really identify with [insert character here] story as a working class kid who suddenly comes into great power and responsibility, even though I grew up in a privileged home with private schooling and access to the film and television industry through my parents."

And isn't it the West's fault for the Ottoman's collapsing after they got stomped in World War I instead of propping them up and defending them against the independence movements? And also the West's fault for simply not doing anything and allowing chaos to fill the power vacuum left by the collapse of this and the other regimes in the region?

There are problems that you have said but there are also problems with some Muslim kids in the West from more conservative families being raised to not mix with the majority society.

Their religion says pork (and chicken and red meat not cut a certain way), alcohol, women wearing what they want, homosexuality, dancing, singing, dating marrying who you want and pre-marital sex is wrong, while growing up in societies where all of those are the norm for the majority, it can create problems.

Not necessarily leading to terrorism but just divisions in society. But then those divisions can further create the foundation for the bad actors who radicalise there young men and women to perform these actions.

You can't control how families raise their kids but any organisations that radicalise people should be investigated and shut down well in advance of these kids going down these rabbit holes.

See the funny part is no President has started a war by "going through the normal channels" since World War II. Yet this guy feels entitled to lecture others about what is or isn't normal. (While also not understanding Supreme Court rulings he's never bothered to read about.)

At the same time this post is correct, in that Obama did the same exact thing as Trump of simply declaring the conflict over in Libya even as bombings continued for some time, yet none of Era has ever complained about this. So the norm was effectively established by their inaction and even more by their support for Hillary Clinton. (Who is who came up with this method and made the declaration of the conflict being over.)

There does seem to be a weird dichotomy between Western Europe and Muslim majority countries with regards to how they treat Islamist extremist organisations. In Western Europe there's not wanting to cross the line towards racism and discrimination which lets some of the bad actors fly under the radar. But in Muslim majority countries they just go hard against the bad actors.

Marvel and, to a lesser extent, WB used to release interesting films once in a while like Nolan's Batmans, Black Panther, Winter Soldier, Logan, etc. Films with distinctive visions that actually felt exciting.

There's not been an actual quality superhero film for years. Marvel's TV shows are the only things that sometimes do something even remotely interesting.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with Superman. In fact, there was a lot of hype surrounding Supergirl after her appearance in Superman. People were absolutely excited to see her again.

It was the trailers and marketing for Supergirl that killed that hype.

Nice try though.

And in general, we need to stop othering regular muslims. Yes, there are enclaves that are a problem, but they are the result of people being discriminated against time after time after time.

You can say young men are all cunts and need to be drowned at birth because they’re white men until the cows come home, but don’t you dare spell out the issues with Islam and the very foundations it’s based on? No that’s Islamophobia, incredible

It's illuminating that you had to clarify this, because that and another person deriding Avatar as a kid's cartoon act like artists are incapable of using real world references and cultures for their work even if it's fantasy, or that it's not really important to go to real cultural sources or consultants for the sake of respect because it's just a cartoon.

When I tell you people don't respect artists, it's little things like that I'm talking about.
Nepenthe wrote:Sometimes, depending upon how deep and accurate you want to go, consultation of human beings is absolutely necessary, because the information we have access to is largely determined by what the imperial core seems adequate enough to access for its own ends.

What gets put on the Internet, what gets boosted, and thus what gets stolen by the crawlers of the algorithm depends upon who has access to the infrastructure necessary to put their culture on the Internet, and what Big Tech and by proxy our governments allow us to access. Most people here have no idea what the fuck is going on in Namibia's Internet ecosystem, for example- their memes, their manner of online speech, their unique social networks (if any, because unless you have a firewall like China you might be fucked, stuck in America's ecosystems like Amazon or Google with no economic throughline to developing your own stuff, aka digital colonialism)- and there's reasons for that beyond apathy.

It's similar to the problem of trying to get first-hand sources from peoples who went through colonialism or genocide in pre-Internet times- they didn't exist in conditions which would have allowed them ample access to recording and preserving direct experiences, so we have more substantial first-hand knowledge of their oppressors' lives instead.

My point being, yes if you don't give a shit, you can just go to Google and look up some Asian outfits for your fake anime bullshit and call it a day. But if you do give a shit, you start talking to real human beings who have lived the life you're trying to make money off of.

Start giving a shit and pay people.

Also noticed this thread dying when someone posted actual information about copyright instead of outrage and members indicating they believe plagarism is/was/should be a crime:

I'm 100% against all AI bullshit and they should've ruled in the photographers favour, but it'll 100% be double standards if they were a big corp/someone rich I feel.

This is a terrible precedent to set in general, but the double standards are insane also.

Like I don't get how courts, politicians and even c-suits don't understand why people hate AI more and more.
Nepenthe wrote:AI proponents have never cared about plagiarism, no. That was the only way to get the machine working in the first place.

*Duh. Plagiarism. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Like everything became the instant and short term focused so much that we are seeing legit the rule books ripped and burned in front of us and then we see them act all shocked and surprised when data centers get blocked, ect.

Like I just don't see how anyone looking mid to long term here couldn't see how this damages the house and the grounds the house is built on.
I don't think AI proponents particularly care because the laws were never actually in the masses' favor to begin with, and they don't care about the masses so much as they care about capital being able to run roughshod over said masses so they get whatever they can out of it, whether its financially-motivated or just a naive faith in a tech revolution being able to solve our problems, a notion I dismantled in another conversation. I think once again people need to understand that what we're seeing is just unfettered capitalism at play, and there will be no shortage of petty bourgeois workers who will favor anything that bolsters capitalism.
Quote:Agree, this shit is so far beyond what anyone who wrote the original laws could possibly have conceived that we clearly need new ones to figure this shit out. The fact that people are reduced to pursuing zoning law solutions because it's inherently and universally acknowledged that that's more likely to jam a wheel in the spokes of tech corporations than a real, federal law is insane.

It's ridiculous that we have such a broken democracy that judges are stuck trying to figure out how laws from the 20th and 19th century apply to 28th dimension algebra leveraged into transformer-based generative AI because Congress is never going to actually update the Copyright Act to address it.

On the other hand, I think that, at least in America, any changes that Congress would make to how copyright law works would probably be better for AI corpos than harsher, so I guess it's a double edged sword that they don't do shit.

The original images are copywritten. The second image up there is not the original image and is not owned by the photographer.

It would be the same in the US, if I took an image of a dog someone took a photo of and then drew a similar image of it or asked an AI to make something similar, it wouldn't be against the law. You are allowed to make derivative works.

Its not Germany, but Getty lost a massive lawsuit in the UK over AI making very similar images to their stock photos, logo and all, because the AI doesn't make the same images. Copyright only really applies to the actual same work being copied, not a similar or derivative work. AI is allowed to train off of freely available images on the internet and generate similar looking images, so long as it does not publish exact images or retain them on their website or something.
DSDreamer wrote:
Quote:So, as long as you're distributing someone's work for free, it's not copyright infringement? Good to know.
That ruling also dealt with the fact that Robert Kneschke freely distributed the images in question online for anyone to see. Its not theft to download an image off a website. The core issue in the lawsuit was that he wrote on his website that he prohibits the automated scraping of his images by web crawlers or other entities. (Which is really not enforceable)

In fact, the EU specifically has a law in place to make it legal to data mine or scrape images off the web if you are doing it for research, which is why it was ruled in favor of LAION.

Also there's this guy saying what "should happen" is what already is the case:
Quote:It makes sense, you don't own the way an image is framed. What should happen is that people should be allowed to freely distribute this comic, as AI works should not be allowed to be copyrightable.
