The main super PAC backing El-Sayed – Fighting for Michigan PAC – has played a smaller but still significant role in the race’s outside-spending landscape. Through June 30, the committee raised nearly $2.5 million and held $1.1 million in cash on hand. As of July 17, it reported spending more than $1.8 million on the race.

Much like A Stronger Michigan, its operations are rooted far closer to the Washington Beltway than the Motor City, and its headquarters is also linked to its treasurer. Peter Sarasohn, who serves as both treasurer and custodian of records, runs the PAC out of a Silver Spring, Md., townhome that he previously listed on FEC documents as his home address. Sarasohn, a veteran Democratic operative who was budget director for Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, now runs a consulting firm and also serves as treasurer of Maine Senate candidate Troy Jackson’s exploratory committee. He did not immediately respond to OpenSecrets’ request for comment.

Fighting for Michigan has drawn criticism from Stevens over its funding sources, with the congresswoman claiming during a July 7 debate that El-Sayed “has a super PAC that is run by his father-in-law.” One of the committee’s top donors is indeed Michigan nephrologist Jukaku Tayed, El-Sayed’s father-in-law, who has contributed $300,000 across three $100,000 installments between Feb. 3 and June 22. But while super PACs – which may raise and spend unlimited sums – are prohibited from coordinating that spending with federal candidates, there is no credible evidence that the super PAC is “run by” Tayed, as Stevens claimed.

Another super PAC, American Priorities, spent just over $350,000 as of July 16 to support El-Sayed, FEC records show. That committee formed earlier this year to counter AIPAC spending in Democratic primaries. Funded in part by $1 million contributions from Omer Hasan and Mohammad Waqas – two top donors to a super PAC supporting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani – it spent $1.6 million to back Adam Hamawy’s congressional bid in New Jersey and $1.1 million on Nida Allam’s in North Carolina.

Like I understand where Israel comes from but I thought there was a LOT more fervor/unification around Dems about ICE sucking.

Dems have been shifting right for a few years now on multiple policies. This senate race is a microcosm of that.

They think the Democrats have shifted right on immigration enforcement?

Usually the disagreement about issues Democrats have with Republicans is one about degree and methodology than one of base principles. Democrats also agree with strict immigration, deportation measurements, and detention centers- just not the racist fever dream that's killed good innocent white citizens that this current iteration of ICE is. It's similar with the Iran War- the main issue is about the lack of congressional approval Trump got for the war in the first place. You have to kill and pilfer from Arabs by the book, goshdarnit.

I very very casually knew El Sayed during undergrad as we went to Michigan at the same time.

Nothing that would make or change my vote (and I already cast my mail in ballot), just kind of a neat thing.

The thoughts of a three time Trump voter is worth less than dog crap. You can instantly tell from their comments how easy it was for someone like Trump to ensnare someone like that three times in a row.

This is literally the average and median voter.

And she did leave because she's not a straight-ticket voter. Nowhere did she say she switched from voting from Democrats to voting for all Republicans. She mentioned two candidates.

This is especially rich for a supposed politics knower to attack someone in Michigan for when someone who votes for Trump and then votes Democratic down-ballot is in fact the marginal voter of Michigan. The same person who elected Whitmer and has previously elected Democrats to every Senate seat, while also voting for Trump and Rick Snyder. Much of the UAW has voted for Trump all three times while sending a share of their wages to the Democratic Party.

The thing with pitbulls is funny. I can believe that there's a little more nuance to it but like the entire core concept of dog breeds is that certain behavior can be amplified through breeding. That's why we got so many damn breeds in the first place.

it's actually crazy how you can breed a dog to stop everything and hold perfectly still and point directly at something its master would be interested in, like even the babies just do it spontaneously

I've always been a big restaurant person. I also worked in one at one point. Hard business! Hard industry. Moreover, restaurants notoriously pay low wages.

Plus I'm aware of how inflation has made running these places even harder. Restaurants are a low margin business. Many first time entrepreneurs learn this the hard way.

That said, I just don't feel many are worth it these days, especially in post pandemic prices. There's that infamous meme in our community of the 30 dollar lunch. That's how I feel most of the time I go out and try a new place--even places rated high by publications AND social media reviews.

That said, there are still a lot of great ones that I do frequent. They've gotten pricier too but the quality is still there.

I've heard a big issue with the talent drain post COVID, many chefs, cooks, waitstaff got out of the industry and it didn't help with overall quality.
