Not long ago a study would have been "reported" in the New York Times and so repeated across the media and broadcast on the evening news. You would have never heard any criticism at all of it, let alone seen it in a comment at the bottom of the page or splashed across social media. Government policy would establish it as fact, editorials would run again and again about the importance of it, groups would form and fight for its expansion. And even decades later when it was found to be based on nothing but one weirdos assumptions people who should know better and are otherwise skeptical would continue to insist to you it that it was true and there was simply no other way to do things and you were a lunatic for questioning it.
