I had the weirdest relationship with those books. I grew up around the time they originally released and didn't notice they came out despite them getting heavily marketed in schools, then they blew up with the release of the movies and I still didn't read them. I absorbed some of the first movie by proxy because it was on our TV loop at the video store I worked at as my high school evening job, but felt no connection to it. Then I finally read the beginning of the first book while sitting in my mom's car for hours in the middle of the night while waiting for a midnight Wii release event. I made it like two chapters in and went 'this is dumb, I don't like the names' and stopped. Never went back.

It's probably because by the time the books were out, I was already a 10-year veteran of reading significantly more substantial fantasy series and was already writing fantasy stories of my own, so reading a series about a bunch of kids having goofy magic adventures at a school felt like a downgrade from Shannara or the Chronicles of Prydain. But I suppose that's what happens when you're a kid whose mom started reading you the Lord of the Rings every night as a serialized bedtime story when you were 4, lol.

the "self inserting" into a "traditional" gender roles relationship is a pretty common fantasy/kink (sometimes even into the role that is the opposite of what society expects of someone) but it's important to recognize that in reality it really sucks for the wife, unless the husband goes above and beyond what society expects of him AND also she's okay with having to put up with a lot of shit silently, AND that if it doesn't work out (he becomes worse, a divorce or death, etc) she is going to have the deck stacked against her for navigating life post split (did you know that men actually win a majority of custody battles in the US that both parents attend, you will occasionally see chuds claiming the opposite by including stats where the father does not contest custody and it defaults to the mother to invent a fictitious feminist bent to the legal custody battle system)



Point by illustration: I know a couple where it is a silent and uncommented rule that the wife is not allowed to open doors (I think of it like the CisHet version of BDSM). It's not my business so I'm not going to comment on it, but I am thinking in the back of my head that the underlying dynamics of how healthy it is can change an awful lot depending on how enthusiastic both participants are to engage in it, and that (okay now I'm harping) it IMO a worse issue if the wife is not a big fan but playing along, than if the husband is.



Another point: I'm a guy with a lot of spine related chronic pain, anxiety, and digestive issues, and basically every reddit post about symptoms is majority women, who, for anatomical reasons, have many of the same issues hit them even worse than men, on TOP of all of the medical discrimination they face that can make it impossible to get help.



This is not even touching on all of the lasting complications and risks associated with pregnancy (did you know that it can make the mother blind? or that the diagnosis might literally be "if you're lucky you'll be able to see again after a successful delivery"), or the cult of shame around c sections and bullshit natural birth trends that literally kill people.







I'm not, like, trying to harp on this or "go go kill that poster". Lots of successful marriages exist between couples who identify with opposing ends of the two stereotypical roles, who, uh, "play into" them both in and out of the house (whether it be in the kitchen or the bedroom or the supermarket), sometimes even in ways that could/would easily be problematic with less communication and cooperation.



It sounds like the good ending to OP's situation might even be another positive example. It's just extremely important to make sure that y'all are on the same page.
