Lots of men that objectify and sexualize women are seemingly "okay" with lesbian shipping because, at the end of the day, it's two hot women that they get to stare at still for their own pleasure, not because they're trying to do a service and offer more representation.

But before that some people start questioning the premise:

The fact that reading levels went down does not prove or even suggest that Harry Potter didn't have a positive influence on whether kids became readers.

Rationally, it must have. People are not just born readers or not. Becoming a "reader" requires a natural inclination toward reading and also requires something to trigger that love. It's conceivable, and at scale certain, that some people who were naturally inclined to read discovered that love because of Harry Potter.

It's just that whatever caused kids to be less likely to read outweighed whatever positive impact Harry Potter had.

I read the article included with this post but it doesn't really prove Harry Potter did one thing or the other, it just shows people have been reading less overtime which isn't surprising. It's possible that Harry Potter got people into reading but over all readership declined in the same period because the strength of effect from the internet / social media was much stronger than the one from Harry Potter. I don't have time to watch this guy's thirty minute video about it.

It feels more like the takeaway should be that even the HP books couldn't combat the fall in literacy that accompanied the rise of the internet.

"Harry Potter got me into reading" always felt more anecdotal than a statistical assertion to me anyway.

Echoing others in this thread that this is not a very convincing argument. I know it feels good to dunk on JK Rowling, but we gotta do better than this.
