That is horrible to be honest and very sad.

On one level, it is clear that he wasn't truthful about his achievements or credentials. On a wider level, this incident exposes the systematic racism within the media. In particular, if he was white there wouldn't have been this level of scrutiny, backlash, hate vitriol. In many ways, it was because he was made into a poster boy of black excellence, and the racist traditional and social media viewed this as an opportunity to attack ethnic minority involvement in academia.

Regardless of Arday's personal actions - which do seem to have been dishonest, and leveraging a rather fictitious personal narrative for career advancement - it is being used as a piece of ammunition to attack ethnic minorities more broadly in a completely dishonest way. Having a PhD myself and several family members in academia, as well as supervisors / colleagues, etc., who were ethnic minorities...my experience is that pretty much everybody has to work incredibly hard to make it within academia, and those that progress most, as in other fields of life, are not just the most talented, capable...they are the ones who can play the game best in an increasingly corporate university setting that isn't always particularly compatible with taking more ethical stances.

They still don't understand the actual news story. Cambridge had to be dragged kicking and screaming into investigating the plagiarism claims. They should have handled this themselves ages ago but they ignored the millions of red flags because they were so enamored with the idea of having found a magical minority candidate who checks basically every box in the book. Like sorry if that sounds right wing but there is just no way of not seeing how this was DEI gone awry. This also hurts all the actual legitimate minority scholars because it now looks like Cambridge will just accept whoever as long as they tick a box. That does play right into the right wing but that doesn't make it any less true, these are simply facts of the situation. The anger should be directed at Cambridge for allowing this to happen. 

I'm sad that Arday killed himself but it's also not hard to see how these were endless lies catching up with him. If he really had autism he needed to be handled with care, not be endlessly validated for every more and more outrageous lie he told.

Listen, a lot of us do read every post in here and we discuss the thread at times. The problem is just because people say they want something doesn't mean we can or should give it to them. There will be times we say yes, because it's actually a good idea and will make the forum a better place; there will be times we say no, because there are consequences to that action you guys either don't realize or want to acknowledge for whatever reason.



A suggestions came in recently through a report about potentially moving live-service or seasonal game OTs to the main gaming forum instead of sticking them into hangouts because they're both positive threads and fairly active. It's a good argument and so we talked it over and found that there's so many OTs for live-service games that they would start to drown out other threads and take over the main gaming forum. So, even though the user made a good argument and it would promote the sort of positive, community building threads we want to see, we had to shoot the idea down. Because of a consequence that the user didn't consider when making the suggestion. Instead we wound up implementing a "Seasonal" tag to make finding those threads a bit easier.



Hell, there's a lot of internal suggestions and whatnot that we talk over from time to time that get shut down because of consequences the person making it didn't consider. Initially the "New Releases" subforum was supposed to be four different ones, one for each major platform, but we straight up couldn't figure out how to handle multi-platform games using that structure, among a few other issues. It was a good idea because it would have allowed for more filtering options and for us to handle platform warriors without potentially damaging other communities where they contributed without a problem, but there were issues we couldn't resolve. The thing with "New Releases" is it handles the problem of warriors making game release threads worse, we can just subforum ban for the window, but we miss out on the filtering that the other way would have gotten. So the idea got shut down until we eventually figured out a way to make it work and accomplish our goals.



Then there's times when the idea is a good one and can just be done easily and without issue so we run with it, like the custom emoji thing. A mod suggested it to me, we figured it would be fun, we checked to see if it was possible, when we saw it was we ran with it.



Anyway, the point is that just because every suggestion isn't implemented doesn't mean we aren't listening. It just means there's issues with the suggestion you may not have considered or that it might not accomplish the thing you want it to. The best way to get a suggestion implemented is to have an actual, tangible goal in mind when you make the suggestion, that way if there's an issue it's easier to pivot and try another avenue. If the goal is, for example, more fun threads, then one idea getting shut down isn't the end of it because there's more than one way to skin that cat.

We don't want them to fix the price. We want the build out of AI data centers to stop. A moratorium on AI data center build out would cause demand to fall making prices for things that are actually worthwhile (like consumer electronics) reasonable again.

AI and machine learning outside of specialized industry-specific use cases in engineering, science, mathematics, and healthcare/medicine does not add value to society and is actually a net negative to standard of living, employment/social stability, and climate/environmental impact.

My Best friend is trans and refers to the stomach cramps you get from HRT as “periods”

Hello, I (23f) had a conversation with my best friend (27f) about HRT and how it causes PMS like symptoms and how it’s caused. At one point she said “I can’t wait to have my first period! It’s gonna be so funny we’re gonna be watching a movie and I’ll just randomly get a cramp and die lol”.

I did a lot of research on the subject because I wanted to be as knowledgeable as possible and when it comes to cramps specifically HRT can cause physical stomach cramps but the way it happens is a little different from cisgender women. For cisgender women, estrogen affects the smooth muscle within the uterus when it’s shedding its uterine lining. It’s why we have cramps but it’s deeply tired to our uterus. For trans women it cramps due to the estrogen affecting the smooth muscle within the stomach and intestines. So when there’s a large amount of estrogen it affects the way those muscles contract and often weakens them as well. And of course the more emotional symptoms of PMS also happen because inserting estrogen in your body is going to mess with your hormones a lot and your hormones mess with your emotional. A term I hear some trans women say is “HRT cycle” to describe it but I digress..

It made me feel uncomfortable and slightly offended to hear her say that? Obviously, I don’t feel or want to make her or anyone else to feel less of a woman. I also understand that what trans woman feel physically and emotionally while on HRT (estrogen) is VERY real and the symptoms are also very real and I respect that.

I feel like calling it a “period” (menstrual period) is kind of wrong. Because it isn’t a menstrual period. As a cis woman I feel like my experience as someone who deals with a uterus and the struggles with my cramps and specifically physical blood lost, involuntary biology (just being born this way and not being able to change this, and navigating menstrual stigma, pregnancy fears, birth control side affects, and eventually menopause are my own? I’m not sure how to describe it. I don’t want to offend anyone or sound like I’m transphobic because I’m frankly not. And these feelings are quite conflicting for me. I guess using the term “period” in the way she did as well almost felt like it minimized how it feels for cis woman? Like she’s excited for it and can’t wait for it to happen to her and to me it’s just like. It’s not a good thing for most women. It’s not “fun” and for her to treat it like it kind of is makes me feel weird about it. I’m also aware that this is just something I’m feeling of course but I also feel like quite a few cis women feel the same way?

I guess I’m wondering what I should do about this? Should I just ignore how I feel and keep our friendship as amazing as it already is? Do I even tell her I feel this way? Shes my best friend and I don’t want to come off like I’m minimizing her womanhood either. I want to be very mindful about this and I want to be a good friend as well. Any advice is appreciated.

CLARIFICATION: one thing people mentioned a lot was how much they were excited for their periods. This was entirely a surprise to me just because most of the people in my life hate it so I had also grown to also wish to never get it. So, that also gave me some insight on why she would be excited over this milestone.

I have decided that I’m not going to tell her how I feel and support her as her best friend. especially since talking it through with all of you I’ve changed my mind on the matter. I also found I was probably being too sensitive about it and she’s just trying her best just as well as I am too. I will however probably delicately talk to her about how it could be dangerous to say this in front of people in public though as some of you’ve have stated that people could get aggressive.

I’m happy that most of you were able to understand my intentions are/were not malicious whatsoever. Just like some of you’ve said I am also growing as a person as well which is why I try to be mindful about these things. I will not be responding or replying to posts that are just trying to aggravate or stir the pot. This is not the place for that your hate is not appreciated.
