I have a question, and I swear I'm not trying to play gotchas or give into red scare crap or anything like that. I legitimately want to know what the effective difference between the two economic systems/governments is and why people discuss them this way.

Why is it that the human rights abuses and economic failures of actual socialist governments are brushed over in conversations like this? If we are to be aware of the many, MANY shortcomings of capitalism, why is it not equally intellectually dishonest to treat socialism and communism as the "health care and housing are free for life with no downsides" when history and even our current reality has shown them to be just as susceptible to being abused in ways that promote prejudice and inequality?

I just. Is there something I'm missing? Have I fallen for propaganda? I'm willing to cop to that. But certain governments having socialist or communist systems haven't stopped them from committing acts of genocide, spying on or murdering their citizens, investing in military spending, or having their own people go hungry.

What makes capitalism fundamentally broken but socialism and communism something people just haven't gotten right yet, I guess is my question.

From my perspective, the fundamental tenants of capitalism basically require exploitation of an underclass to uplift the capital class. Where socialism/communism have a more egalitarian framework. The only argument that people have made against it is that it's prone to abuse because humans being humans. Which isn't really a strong argument against it since Capitalism is also prone to abuse. It's just literally a built-in feature and makes it harder to see.

We were raised seeing socialism and communism as bad because of history, but propaganda is one hell of a drug and really skews our realities.

I missed when the "Woke 1" discourse first popped off, so I was a bit behind on the conversation. Catching up with the drama - wherein Mamdani and AOC both denounced "Woke 1" policies such as "defund the police" - the entire fracas strongly represented something that has been bugging me about online political rhetoric for a while. Progressives and left leaning folks so easily allow conservative interests to corral their policies and reframe them. And "woke" being appropriated by the right and turned into a pejorative is perhaps the most disgusting recent example of this. And of course the media is complicit in this charade, but the call is coming from inside the house as well.



"Woke" as a term originates as black slang from the 60s when a lot of black radical thought on imperial America was consolidated and organized. It means to be conscious and aware of how America attempts to subjugate and oppress the minority class with propaganda and bald faced lies, alongside collusion and intimidation or straight up murder. You are awakened and see with fresh eyes, hence you are "woke." Pretty straightforward. "Redpill" and all its offshots are (white) rebrands of this concept.



White folks first got a hold of the term when politics on social media really started taking off as we got deeper into the 2010s, as rhetoric could more easily be shared. And it was generally used as an adjective to show respect or solidarity with a shared ideology, as in "she is so woke because she supports a Green Initiative." I distinctly remembered being annoyed at the time because it was appropriating black verbiage in order to engage in mindless virtue signaling, but given that black voices were becoming more prominent, I chalked it up to an awkward element in coalition growing.



But everything since then has reinforced that most white Americans, including progressives and leftists, fundamentally do not understand or care for black politics and ideology. It shows every time, and this "woke 1" situation and everything surrounding it tells the story plainly. To use black political speech as an expedient tool such as abolitionist language like "defund the police" requires a moral core that most white people do not share, namely an inherently adversarial relationship with the day to day police state. Nor an existential relationship with the application of law through state monopoly on violence. I think many can certainly *empathize* with the struggle, and see the downstream impacts of racism as A Bad Thing. This is where AOC and Mamdani come in.



As a lawmaker and city executive, AOC and Mamdani are beholden to many masters in a Democracy. A democracy that is still majority white, but that distinction is fading year over year, and the current cultural moment is being waged over that fact. "Defund the police" became a popular slogan in progressive spaces on the heels of George Floyd's public execution, as the social unrest at the time was perhaps at its highest point in decades. Left leaning politicians across the spectrum took up ostensibly black centered causes, but inelegantly and mindlessly, which just like using the term "woke" in the first place was mindless virtue signaling. AOC and Mamdani both engaged in that virtue signaling without adopting the requisite moral core, and that's why they're backsliding on "defund the police" and acceding to conservative framing that it was woke nonsense that they went too far in engaging with. Because neither AOC nor Mamdani are actual abolitionists. And most people aren't! The biggest movie of the summer is shameless copaganda. So it's inherently bad framing from the first principle to take defund the police on as a policy plank unless you actually want to heavily cut police funding, rather than redefine the police force's relationship with the community. It's why certain reforms are massively successful in Democratic cities such as bail reform and mental health task forces, and why body cams were so easily adopted despite them mostly helping the cops rather than the citizens. There are several popular police reform initiatives going on in certain Dem states for this reason, but all of them come with massive up arrows on police spending.



This is a failure of leadership on AOC and Mamdani's part, and why leftists were outflanked by the terminally incurious Right with the term woke, because their apparatus (DSA et al) do not fundamentally engage with the morals underpinning these inherently black politics. It's why leftists still have a massive racism issue among their ranks to the point that Graham Platner could get as far as he did, and break leftist discourse so thoroughly. Any successful engagement now and in the future requires an honest accounting of this lack of comprehension within ostensibly shared morals, otherwise this schism remains. Virtue signaling myopics who used black ideology to shortcut their way to influence now are in part responsible for a term meaning to be aware of the state's violence to the oppressed now being used to call anyone who question said state shrill radicals. Abolitionist ideology has been successfully co-opted by its worst enemies because its supposed champions were faking the funk. Now that more convenient targets like AIPAC, Israel, and ICE can comfortably draw their most colorful barbs without much backlash, they don't want to play in the riskier markets of black facing politic any more.
