Quote:It's only a few games that were ever banned - to my recollection CP2077 and Hogwarts Legacy, there might be 1 or 2 more. Other than like, porn games I mean.

We have had discussions about whether other games should be (KCD2, Atomic Heart, all of microsoft collectively; but there were others too), however the policy appears to be that they're ok to make threads about but it's also permissible to make every thread just be about the controversy.

I'm not a fan of that compromise, I think it encourages conflict in the community in an undesirable way, but it is what it is.
Quote:I agree. Like what would even be the point to having an OT about this game? Either threadmark and link a controversy thread to keep the discussion separate from the game, or ban the game. This just invites toxicity.

That failure sprang from the government's systematic neglect of its largest trained technical workforce simply because they were women. As computing experienced a gender flip, becoming male-identified in the 1960s and 1970s, labor problems grew into structural ones and gender discrimination caused the nation's largest computer user—the civil service and sprawling public sector—to make decisions that were disastrous for the British computer industry and the nation as a whole.

Programmed Inequality shows how the disappearance of women from the field had grave macroeconomic consequences for Britain, and why the United States risks repeating those errors in the twenty-first century.

Looked at the academic reviews of the book:
https://sci-hub.ru/10.1080/17581206.2019.1575093, WARNING: USES THEIR DEADNAME like all reviews from the time wrote:And then … oh, how to write this without seeming like a dinosaur? ‘A technocratic heteronormativity relied on the structures of patriarchy and the nuclear family to produce the ideal staff for Britain’s modernizing, information-based economy’, she writes. This is, sorry, not just an inelegant sentence but also ridiculous. Does she mean that a civil service committee sat and deliberated that the post-1945 world would best be served by excluding gay and lesbian people and reinforcing a world in which father, mother and two or three children was the way to technological success? Obviously not. Queer people had an appalling time, in all walks of life until … well, still today in many areas, but it’s better than it was for most. It is not evidence of a conspiracy; it is evidence of how white men in the UK – as well as in the US and many other countries – vigorously discriminated for years against women, people of colour, Jews, LGBTQ þ people and people with disabilities. Fortunately, by 2018, we are better than that, though in many cases the improvement is only marginal.

But at Bletchley Park in World War Two gay men such as Alan Turing thrived and – within the bounds of the need for secrecy and compartmentalised security – were celebrated by their colleagues.

It's funny that as a forum that hates AI they also completely overestimate AI. If AI would allow devs to have the same production schedule as one of those Chinese gacha devs every western developer would be all over it.

The extinction of the British computer industry by 1974 will be news to anyone who grew up here in the 80s, when we had the highest home computer ownership rates in the world, driven by UK companies like Sinclair, Acorn, Amstrad, etc.

That Acorn RISC Machine architecture went on to do alright for itself I think.

Actually, it's a mid-to-late 40's white woman who's only ever published about women and in feminist journalists who wants you now to know she's not like the other girls:

Her programming experience, that she proudly points to in all her profiles, was nearly a year of being a UNIX sysadmin after undergrad at Harvard back in 2001. Her degrees are all in History, and she's been a history academic ever since.

But around 2019 she seems to have shifted her focus:
Quote:My upcoming book project looks at instances of resistance to large hegemonic digital systems, and includes chapters on the long history of transphobic algorithmic bias, and the connections between computing and queer history.
Quote:"Hacking the Cis-tem" IEEE Annals of the History of Computing (March 2019)
This paper looks at the case of transgender Britons who tried to correct the gender listed on their government-issued ID cards, but ran up against the British government's increasingly computerized methods for tracking, identifying, and defining citizens. These newly computerizing systems show some of the earliest examples of transphobic algorithmic bias: explicit attempts to program trans people out of the system can be seen in the programming of the early Ministry of Pensions computer system designed to apportion benefits to all tax paying British citizens. Transgender citizens pushed back against these developments, attempting to hack the bureaucratic avenues and categories available to them, laying the groundwork for a coalescing political movement. This paper argues that uncovering the deep prehistory of algorithmic bias and investigating instances of resistance within this history is essential to understanding current debates about algorithmic bias, and how computerized systems have long functioned to create and enforce norms and hierarchies.
If you are unable to access the final version of the article served on IEEE because you do not have institutional access to it, you may read a preprint draft here.

She's an idiot about the new thing in her supposed field:

She's really talking specifically about the mainframe industry and the claim that the UK led the world is one of those true but only in spirit claims. It's based purely on the Colossus which was a secret military-only thing and was about to be surpassed by ENIAC which was public and the start of a commercial industry.

If you want an actual government policy that stunted the UK mainframe industry it was probably that the government owned and broke up the machines at the end of the war to keep them secret while the US military only ever owned the total machine designs not the components in the first place so essentially wouldn't have been able to stop companies like Rand and IBM from selling them as happened. But it's mostly questionable that the UK even had a computer industry that could have stopped IBM, none of the competitors in the US ever could either even when they had advantages in the tech or capital.

It's frankly an absurd premise that had the UK government just prioritized civil service women somehow the industry would have spawned a company that could take on one of the world's most dominant corporations that brutally crushed all its competitors until the industry shifted. And whose dominance was based largely on its service contracts.

While most of the world seems to be experiencing record-levels of hype and anticipation for this game, I've mostly only ever felt resentment toward it. I resent that Rockstar milked GTAV for over a decade with their evergreen online mode that printed money via MTX. I resent that after all this time it's only getting a digital release. I resent that many of the people that were the driving force behind the GTA games back when I loved them are no longer with the company. It's mostly nothing but negative feelings towards this garguantuan, long overdue game on my end.

Please understand: I loved every prior GTA game. The legendary run of the PS2 trilogy was something I'm so happy to have experienced firsthand as it happened in my teen years, and the staggering quality and ambition of both GTA4 and 5 on the PS3 (and beyond) had me hooked for months as an adult. Like many others, I always felt that Rockstar made by far the best open-world games that felt far more detailed and hand-crafted and less bloated with repetition than most other games in the genre. And that very well might end up being the case for GTA6 as well when it finally releases, but I just feel too angry at the path it has taken to release to want to play it and support them.

We got Vice City (my favorite in the series) less than a year after GTA3. And I know that was a different time (and that was insane turnaround even for the time), but I just can't square present-day Rockstar with the Rockstar that did that. Present-day Rockstar was content to just re-release GTAV three times while raking in money with its MTX-riddled online mode. They were happy to skip an entire fucking console generation without even attempting to make a new entry. From a financial standpoint, obviously I can understand. But from an artistic standpoint, it all feels hollow to me in a way that the old GTA games never did. They always felt like this rare, perfect blend of artistic and technical ambition with some of the broadest overall appeal of any game series out there. GTA6 doesn't feel like that to me, and it's mostly because of how long they took to even attempt making it and how they're going about finally releas

The retard’s thread backfires

Quote:Hm, maybe "resent" is too strong of a word, judging by people's reactions so far in this thread.

I guess what I "resent" is that I'm not excited for what should've been one of my most anticipated games ever because of the road it has taken to get here and the circumstances under which it's finally releasing. And like someone else said earlier, I do kind of resent that GTAO was popular enough to basically allow for no new GTA games to be made in over a decade. But I get that that's not Rockstar's fault, really.

Basically, my feelings probably shouldn't be as laser-targeted toward Rockstar themselves and should be more just generally annoyed with the state of modern AAA game development, online gaming, and billions being made by MTX all coming together to prevent us from getting new entries in great franchises at a more respectable clip like we used to.

Although I do legitimately resent Rockstar for going digital-only after all this time for such a landmark release. That I won't forgive one iota, and honestly don't bother posing a counterargument for that one. I don't wanna hear it. Just look at how the only complete versions of the old GTA games are the original disc releases because of the games being stripped of music gradually over the years as licenses expired. Fuck that.
