it's not actually an unfounded idea, there are a number of data center success stories like Loudoun County, where the property taxes from the 200+ data centers have been passed on as savings for the regular people living in the area, like $5000 savings per year per person
but that's an incredibly specific situation that relies on favorable dealings and local government dedicated to handling things in a healthy way...the problem right now is data center developers approaching random unprepared municipalities looking to take advantage of them, fishing for good deals among sleepy rural communities anyone wise to what they can actually ask of these developers in terms of location and taxes, and they can easily move on to the next exploitable little town |
