Just browsing the threads for Monster Hunter Ascendance DLC, FFVII news, Crimson Desert DLC, etc., it genuinely looks like this community doesn't even like video games.  It's just petulant gripes and whining. 

AI is killing gaming! The industry is collapsing due to corporate greed! Gaming companies are evil and firing their talented devs!

fuck these stupid games they're making for not catering to my very specific tastes; they all look like trash. Fuck Capcom, Fuck Square-Enix, fuck Sony, Fuck Microsoft.

REEE have made it abundantly clear they care more about talking about videogames than actually playing them. r/playwolverine is a hilarious copefest. Nearly every post is "why are people hating on this game!"

Love that the person getting those screenshot, very clearly downloaded the videos, then went through these scenes frame by frame in order to find the exact frame that they personally believe to look the least appealing. The biggest giveaway being that they're both in the middle of speaking so they have that half open mouth look that makes people look worse notably worse than being straight-faced.

This is related to something I've been feeling for a bit now and that I've discussed elsewhere on ERA, feeling quite disconnected with the rest of geekdom and fandom, moving back from online discourse and feeling at odds with most other fans.

Like with card games, I no longer play real card games anymore. Outside of EDOPro and buying the occasional card if I really like them (the last ones being Silent Magician and Swordman Zero and the last Gandora card) I just kind of gave up and just feel disconnected with the YGO fandom and other card games; and the main issue and one I feel like I'm in a tiny minority with is quite frankly I hate rarity.

Whenever I see "Oh this is card is graded as "Super Rare!" and "Oh this card is Super Special Awesome Grade Holofoil Limited edition 20th Anniversary!" I just role my eyes. I don't get joy out of the RNG of needing to buy booster after booster for a card I want (aka gambling style tactics) or have to pay in the grey market for an upcharged version of the card. I don't get the appeal of making stuff deliberately rare and hard to get. Doesn't help that I find stuff like Holofoil ugly, I've never found it looking good; just making the art hard to read or the text unreadable. Same with "Borderless" cards, it's just ugly to me and it's sad YGO started doing it, I'd rather have a clean unified design, with clear text and nice readable art that isn't covered in text. It's sad such nice artwork will forever be covered with text.

All of this feeds I feel into the awful scalper and "investor" culture that has spawned in card game circles, that well for one has absolutely fucked searching anything Pokemon on YouTube (without Blocktube, thank fuck) and also just feels disgusting and creepy. It doesn't matter if the companies are printing more and more cards, the culture they've made and them encouraging that culture with more rarity, limited edition, RNG etc encourages and feeds and makes it worse and worse and worse. Whenever I see people be snidey at people for saying Paid RNG should be regulated or banned in games (or games below legal gambling age) and "Well should game games also be regulated?" quite frankly, yes. They should be and should have been decades ago because the same tactics we see in games like Roblox spawned from what we saw with card games.

Which quite frankly is an issue I have with so much of geekdom, so much of it is based on this weird mentality of have and have not. That stuff like card games, toys, gaming etc should be exclusionary, a mentality that feels absolutely fed and bred by corporations. Quite frankly (I'm saying that a lot today) if you're enjoyment of something comes from "I have something that no one else can have" I have to ask why that is? Why is that appealing? Why is exclusion considered appealing? If you had a Blue teddy bear, why would it bother you if others (and other poorer then you) also had and loved the same teddy bear?

This isn't just a card game thing, I get the same feelings with toys when I see people brag about owning £800+ Toys and Lego Sets, or online gamers who brag about having $50 "Premium" skins. Why? Why is you enjoyment of something based on the fact others can't enjoy it? This is where the disconnect come from because to me, it just comes across as elitism, it's hard not to notice the same type of rhetoric that is used to mock poor people is so often used, it's all about "status" and feeling special, to treat yourself as "better" as other people and fans, that you're a better more loyal fan and like that's just pathetic to me. I don't like or want that.

Why would I get hyped or impressed about some expensive and "rare" (because so often their isn't an actual reason for the item to be rare, especially digital goods) card, toys, skins etc that I'll never own, never have and will only be used and played (or "collected" in most cases) by just a few people? I'd much rather have something cheaper and more accessible, something everyone can enjoy and can afford. I get more enjoyment out of the idea of everyone being able to enjoy something rather I just being able to enjoy it. Fuck rarity, everyone can have a card. Fuck some $900 Transformer that only collectors can afford, gives me something £10 that I can play with to my hearts content. Everyone should be able to get involved and have fun, fuck the idea of gatekeeping. Why should I give a fuck about what Collectors want if what collectors want is to brag and feel superior because they're wealthier and are capitalists? Fuck capitalism.

And that's the thing, I often feel like I'm the only one who feels that, it feels so often that everyone else is hyped about the idea of rare cards, limited edition BS, FOMO, Battle Passes etc and I'm like... Not, I just find it depressing, feeding into toxic behaviour, exploiting children, the neurodivergent and people with addictive personalities; and just find it tacky to be honest.

And disconnect feels like it's at its peak when it comes to Rainbow Capitalism, like I'm supposed to give corpos a pat on the back because they release limited edition LGBTQ+ stuff for a month to "celebrated" pride month... When in reality it's just exploiting and profiting off pride month, there is no actual reason this merch, this acknowledgement of us needs to be exclusive for a month; it'd be better if it was there all year round; but get treated like a killjoy when you point that out. I don't get hyped when I see Wizard of the Coast release a limited edition Pride Card when that card could just be accessible for any LGBTQ+ person at any time.

One of the most obvious examples of this is with Marvel's Loki or more specifically "Lady Loki", like it's hard not to notice with games especially ALWAYS charge for Lady Loki, that if you want gender fluidity acknowledged, if you want want of the most famous genderfluid characters in modern fiction have their gender acknowledged who have to pay every single time (and I'm sure Marvel Tokon will be latest example of it, and I'm sure they'll make Lady Loki a limited Battle Pass item on top of that (and a "premium" item at that). It makes it clear these companies don't give a fuck about genderfluid people or trans people like myself etc, they only care for our money and have shown time and again to tell us to fuck off the moment we're inconvenient.

I think that's why I'm so disconnected, it feels like so much of Geekdom is so imbedded with Capitalism, where worth is determined in "brand loyalty" aka, money spent, hours played, owning things others can't etc and I don't get joy from that anymore. It's part of the reason why I've more into lore discussion, fan art, fan fiction etc, stuff that's free, open to everyone and just more fun to me. I love Transformers, I'm a life long fan of the Transformers, I love making stories about the Transformers, but I don't want to support Hasbro, I don't feel the need to pay for expensive toys, if that makes me less of a fan now, then so be it.

What a week. Folks might remember I posted about finding a lump on my cat earlier this week. Welp, the time I knew was coming has arrived.

I survived seven rounds of layoffs at my job (which I really loved, by the way.) only to get an email saying I was canned.

My wife always encouraged me to stick with it because she has a VERY good, high-paying job but man, it still sucks. She's encouraging me to take time off but I just feel like there's a ball of anxiety in the pit of my stomach. Thank God we're "DINKS" (Double Income No Kids...well at least we WERE double income) We have a ton of money saved up and I'm jumping on her benefits when mine end at the end of this month.

I've personally avoided AI for the most part, as I've been with this job for about eight years, aka a time period where artificial intelligence was really popping off, but now I gotta figure out how to use it for resume building/applying I guess. Rough start to September.
