I would rather not discuss too many details (it's a long story and thank you to those who are not immediately judging me instead of offering consolation and compassion) of how we got into debt over 7 years of mishap (including going on unpaid leave for 7 months and paying COBRA while moving across the state to take care of my dying father…), except for that yes it's about $200-250k between me and my husband and our student loans and cc/loan debt but about $150-200k is mine, including interest bearing student loans since 2010. I plan to pay it off with my signing/bonuses and data scientist salary (I'm looking for director or manager roles when I graduate because I have 10 years of working/tech managing/supervision experience plus a dual-title PhD (Bioengineering & Data Science and a PhD Certificate in Computational Molecular Biology)…so that is kind of expected to have bonuses). My husband makes double what I make right now and it's been a huge source of frustration for him, despite the fact in 6-12 months things will flip and I will make 2-3x his current income.

I cried all day yesterday.

We cried. He's decided. He said he will always love me and be my friend and soul mate and love unconditionally except that he doesn't and can't love me as a partner anymore. We cried and thanked each other for helping each other grow and survive the worst moments of our lives. He wants to start a new chapter where we enjoy a better relationship where we are not partners in money or marriage. He thinks he can be better for me this way.

I'm devastated. I understand. However it hurts us both so much

He said he will be absolutely gentle and fair and cooperative with the divorce process

And he will make it good for both of us

And we are staying together for 1 more year

And we will not sell the house, at least immediately.

We will do what's best for the investment

No you don’t, you have the most surface level interpretation most of the time, and when you go deeper is just to shit on something rather than appreciate whenever is trying to do. In fact, that is a problem that most RE shares.

Let me elaborate: when I engage with fiction, I always drill down to the most abstracted level of interpretation you can give it.

I'll use an example that this forum is probably pretty familiar with: Berserk, specifically the Golden Age anime adaptation from 1997. In this framework, the characters and their specific details matter only insofar as they serve the broader, abstracted metaphor.

Superficially it's a story about Guts and Griffith and their intrapersonal dynamics, Griffith's own fall from grace, the Band of the Hawk and all that. But for me, it's been a story about maleness, the rarity of useful/valuable/successful male archetypes models in the world, and the cost of deviating from a very limited set of templates for masculinity. The "moral" is about the consequences to a man who rejects the idealized masculine model in order to explore alternative ideas of maleness/masculinity.

The textual story is obviously impactful, and part of why Berserk is such a popular IP in the modern era. But it's the heavily abstracted interpretation above that really has sat with me and given the story value in my life.

In fact, I judge the quality of any fiction on how well it can be broken down into a purely conceptual level. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy things on a surface level, or that I don't have fun untangling the "lore" of this or that property. But being able to cook something down into an essence and still make it applicable to lived life in the real world is the metric by which I determine something is really special.

Who else is doing this? What are some stories/properties you have cooked down to the stock and a found to be even better when understood in such a stripped bare way?

I'm trying to be as polite and respectful as possible when I inform people on this forum that the saying "Zionists in Israel are a globally destructive force" is something that would be very at home on far-right websites. Like, I'm trying to do my best to not be hyperbolic, overly dramatic, or escalate tensions in here — that is exactly what Nazis believe.
And I'm trying to let people know, it's very easy to feel your feelings and advocate for your sense of justice without doing that. We take great pains not to say that Hamas represents innocent Palestinians. But almost any Israeli Jew would say they are a Zionist totally independent of any thought, feeling, or action they might have toward Palestinians. So, by calling them a "globally destructive force", you're not showing the same respect to not stereotype and generalize the innocent Israeli civilian population that we ask to show to the innocent Palestinian population.

And then, as a reply to the Jewish person pointing out anti-Semitic sentiments, a bunch of people decided to go "well, actually, no".

Just something for people to observe and take notice.


Secondly, as everyone discusses the origins and morality of Zionism, which I'm thrilled people are having because it adds proper nuance and complexity to the loaded term (and hopefully people learn some stuff!), it's been fascinating to see so much discussion and not a single mention of the Holocaust come up.

To me, as a Jewish person, I notice that kind of thing. I don't presume to know peoples' backgrounds or connections or anything. No one does on a forum, that's the beauty of a forum. To me, though, talking about Zionism without ever mentioning the Holocaust would be a signal to me that the discussion is not really including Jewish voices.

Which, is just something for people to note.
