So they gravitate to something that sounds better and make intellectual justifications to extol its virtues over the system that has failed them. It really is that simple. 

Then there are the rare ones that are doing well and are just generally okay with the system changing to help others, however wrongheaded that may be.

I think most of them are just reflexively against anything they perceive as the status quo (especially by the wrong people) rather than their personal utopia and they've been this way well before they got to 40 years old and posting on the welcoming bonfire zeitgeist of the gaming community.

Socialism, even pre-Marx's religious prophecy version, has always been about "okay, imagine utopia" and then stopping. It will always appeal because reality will always fall short. If your entire mentality says reality only falls short (for you) because of everyone else then of course an ideology that says "if you were in power, utopia" is going to be what they adopt. This is basically Rousseau's thesis, he wasn't first but everyone's pretty much cribbed off him since.

"False consciousness" theory is the patch for the simple question of "what if the people you hate run the system" by simply dismissing it and avoiding the cognitive dissonance. (And allowing you to attack the motives of your critics.) Of course once the people are ideologically liberated like I am they will think exactly as I do, why would utopia have people who think differently? This is a normal conceit, or else there would be no point in arguing for your position ever, but it's not an answer to the question to simply claim it's guaranteed to happen because you said so.
