IGN: In regards to diversity in the game, can we expect to see Black characters in Final Fantasy XVI, or people of color (non-white characters) in general? To clarify a bit more, there’s been discussion around the trailers to date featuring mostly white characters, and I wanted to get clarity on whether we can expect the final game to be more diverse.

Naoki Yoshida, Producer: This is a difficult question, but not one that was unexpected, seeing as diversity in entertainment media has become a much-discussed topic as of late. The answer I have, however, may end up being disappointing to some depending on individual expectations.

Our design concept from the earliest stages of development has always heavily featured medieval Europe, incorporating historical, cultural, political, and anthropological standards that were prevalent at the time. When deciding on a setting that was best suited to the story we wanted to tell — the story of a land beset by the Blight — we felt that rather than create something on a global scale, it was necessary to limit the scope to a single landmass — one geographically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world in an age without airplanes, television, or telephones.

Due to the underlying geographical, technological, and geopolitical constraints of this setting, Valisthea was never going to realistically be as diverse as say a modern-day Earth...or even Final Fantasy XIV that has an entire planet (and moon) worth of nations, races, and cultures at its disposal. The isolated nature of this realm, however, does end up playing a large part in the story and is one of the reasons Valisthea’s fate is tied to the rest of the world.

Ultimately, we felt that while incorporating ethnic diversity into Valisthea was important, an over-incorporation into this single corner of a much larger world could end up causing a violation of those narrative boundaries we originally set for ourselves. The story we are telling is fantasy, yes, but it is also rooted in reality.

Basically it's an isolated realm, which is important to the story, and is deeply inspired by medieval Europe on multiple levels. That's the type of story they wanted to tell from the very beginning and now people are basically saying, no, you can't do that. It needs to be a diverse realm, even though they're isolationists which is apparently pretty crucial to the story.
And any response that basically amounts to "well you can't tell that story then" reeks of BS to me.

Basically I'd like to see a storyteller like George RR Martin respond to this, and not people who are mostly concerned in what kind of activism can be pushed

Most popular modern authors will give a reconciliatory message even if they actually disagree with the premise. They need to protect their TV and film contracts from crazy idiots.

I don’t exactly blame them and there is still well intentioned even with the cynical reason to be neutral or not dig to deep about it. I believe in the intentions of GRRM and Neil Gaiman when they say that they don’t have any issue with making some characters black over a random Netflix executive that is pushing for their shitty Witcher spin off. The thing is that they are not going speak up like Gaiman used to do with this issues when they get stupid and insane because is clear that there is more to lose than 10 years ago.

I can't say I blame the mods of these subreddits for reopening after being threatened. They can either get replaced by new mods who will assuredly not allow any form of protest to happen again, or remain in control and hopefully figure out new ways to be a thorn in Spez's side. It's a shitty situation, but I don't think it's right to call them cowards when the alternative is basically handing over the subs to Reddit-picked shitheads.

I place the blame solely with Reddit. Fuck Spez and anyone else involved with these threats.

Nothing about that seems wrong. If you're a moderator and you've been fostering a community for a while, without pay, having someone come in and suddenly go "do what we tell you or you're gone" would be a shitty feeling. Especially if you've been a mod for a while.

People seem to think these subreddits were created in a vacuum, but they're not. They're created by individuals who want to have discussions or make people laugh or whatever, individuals who help maintain those communities.

And yeah, of course moderators go on power trips and all that stuff, and no, it's not exactly humanitarian work, but it fucking sucks to be told by an admin what you can and can't do with a community you created.

It's a thankless job. Just ask Slayven. (You're the only mod I feel comfortable @-ing, sorry, I luv u, thank you)

I think Slayven is the only mod that openly enjoys his job without the outright power tripping like Nephente does. He doesn’t do shit, thought.

I know shitting on mods is easy for the overall user base , but they should should try & look at it from thier perspective. Some of these people have invested literal years, if not decades of thier lives into these communities and that is obviously gonna be an extremely hard thing to give up on. Waddling that down to power tripping is just kind of gross to me & does kind of make the users look bad in my opinion. i think back to my spoiling dead forum days, a site that kept trucking on until the admin got cancer & decided to shut down the site to focus on that. It was heartbreaking, but everyone of us members understood and I really feel like some of these Reddit users should be doing the same instead of screaming about mods being loser virgins who are only doing it because this is the only power they have. I guess the good news in this is this will push these users to leave the site entirely, which is most likely the best way to fight this. But still, I think it's kind of cringe how some are acting.
