Seems to me that some of the self-proclaimed anti-capitalists seem to think the line of unfairness should be drawn just before the point where they have to put their own skin in the game.

Clearly you haven't seen me advocate for wide sweeping changes to the way society is fundamentally structured, like general degrowth, returning land to the Indigenous, full decolonization of Africa, etc. that would all shift wealth and political power back to the people from whom the US and Europe have stolen from.

I have a inherent disagreement with the wealth disparity between Western countries and everyone else, because I am aware of the level of harm that has caused and continues to cause. Going "Well you live in the US and are employed, so you have no skin in the game" is irrelevant to the arguments I consistently make here and elsewhere.

Its worth noting though that the left, while much less ugly than the right, is disappointingly functional to capitalism and many other poisons (white saviorism being one that makes me mad in particular).

So yeah, billionaires are bad, mrbeast is bad, and the left is bad too.

Of course everyone on the left is not anti-capitalist. But I don't think that's a problem with the political doctrines that we typically call "leftist" so much as it is a problem with the people. If you're not adhering to certain principles you say you stand for, that's an indictment on you. Either you need to educate yourself, someone needs to check you, or you need to disentangle any contradictions you have.

But in general, I don't fully cosign that the left is as bad as billionaires and MrBeast on the basis of political doctrine. The left, flawed as they are, are more closely aligned with my beliefs than the former two parties.

In any case, I doubt you will find many people, including myself who would argue with you about the global economic misallocation of resources. It's a pretty obvious issue that is almost as close to objectively true as a political observation can get. Like most macro issues, it's also comfortable to criticise because we are individually incapable of doing anything about it and therefore requires no personal sacrifice. MrBeast for that matter is also incapable of doing anything meaningful about it.

On the contrary, I would consider myself the outlier on this forum. For example, look up past threads about US reparations for Black Americans and see just how many people start balking at the idea of redistributing likely over the trillion dollars back to Black folks that was taken from my ancestors' forced labor. They're filled with complaining, deflective questions, and snide comments about "well, my white ancestors were enslaved by the Arabs, can I get some money too?" Most people here truly don't care about these big historical and social mores the way I do and are happy to maintain and sometimes stick up for oppressive status quos while assuaging you that they're really on your side because they want Black and Trans people in on the grift too.

This leads us back to the issue of criticising individuals as symbols of the system and ultimately my point… if we reserve the right to say "fuck MrBeast because he represents those who manage to get to the 99th rung on the ladder of an inherently unfair system", it wouldn't hurt to step back and realise that on a global scale, many of us are on the 92nd rung" and think about how that looks to those below.

The difference between those on the 92nd rung and MrBeast is that most of us are not constantly tap dancing in front of a YouTube audience. We're not constantly putting ourselves in the spotlight. We're not using those below us to personally ascend the class ladder. Subsequently, we don't have threads made about us and about the good things we actually do all the time. I have a belief that most people in the world lean on a general side of "good" on just a basic social and perhaps biological principle (we're social animals, after all); millions in the United States do good for each other, for animals, and the environment every day, despite getting no recognition for it.

MrBeast not only gets recognition for it, he gets idolization for it. It's this idolatry that's the problem because it fundamentally reinforces capitalism no matter how much you and others try to tell me he's a nice guy. And again, capitalism is a system that can only be sustained upon genocide, slavery, deliberate underdevelopment and disenfranchisement of the South, and minority-based oppressions like misogny and queerphobia, because to fix those things whites in the US and Europe would have to give all the money and land back and they're not about to do that without a fight.

Yes, middle class Americans are likely to lean more towards bourgeois interests than working class interests despite being working class. Any leftist in the world worth their salt though, whether they're in the North or South, would still fundamentally understand that the true Big Bad is still the insanely wealthy, the politicians they've bought, and the military industries they use to protect their wealth. For example, I'm not interested in fighting Robert Downey Jr. on the basis that he largely get his millions from Marvel shit and thus he's richer than me (if he has engaged in any kind of exploitation, that's another story). I'm interested in fighting the billionaire who pays his salary, because that same man was- just a few months ago- trying to fuck over writers and actors, and still actually is. Iger is my fight, not Downey.

For example, due to luck with a local housing bubble, I could sell my house right now, pay off my mortgage, move into a lower socioeconomic area and probably give 200k profit to charity. I'm not going to though, despite my fundamental belief that capitalism is an unfair system that creates an ever-increasing wealth disparity.

I'm of half a mind of charity. Charities are nice things, but many of them exist to try and plug systemic holes in the system. You would instead do better to keep the money that gives you stability and just organize in your community for socialist causes. Start a neighborhood pod and work from there. Join a socialist party. Talk to people in your town and see what's going on and get involved in street activism. Attend school board and local civic meetings. It's not about giving more money, it's about putting people's bodies and minds to work on breaking up bad systems. Money will never fix these things.

With that in mind, someone like MrBeast, albeit on a very lofty rung and privileged as he is, seems to me a somewhat odd choice as the symbolic whipping boy for the ills of capitalism.

It's because the majority of people on Era continue to rush to his defense every single time there's the mildest of criticism because he's just a sweet soft cinnamon roll little boi giving homes to the dogs and water to the Negroes in Africa so how dare you say anything about him. If people, like, stopped kissing his ass, deliberately ignoring people's fundamental issues with the way this kind of philanthropy works, or worse, throwing a bitch-fit every single time he's insulted and saying dummy shit like "you're just jealous" or calling people with arguments "troglodytes," we wouldn't be here every single time there's a thread about a new video.

You do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to the wealthy philanthopist. You just don't. Shutting the fuck up is free.

Is he deserving of more praise than a working class family who scrape together some money for the local food shelter… no. But disproportionate acclaim and recognition is just another shit sandwich that exists in our society. But again, that is very much a hate the game, not the player scenario.

You absolutely can hate wealthy "players" in the game because they are the ones with disproportionately the most power compared to the rest of us. They're not actually players, really; they're the team owners. We're the ones on the court.

That's what made the 'we made water wells' thread so frustrating was people immediately thinking that he was doing something others didn't want to do. I was thinking to myself "aren't there actual organizations that do this".

I guarantee you there is not a single cause that doesn't have a charity, for-profit venture, and/or community organization and activist scene for it. Usually normal folks have stepped up to the plate long before the wealthy did, just as a means of survival or just empathy for one's immediate conditions. People are doing good all the time, but it's very easy with millionaire and billionaire philanthropy to believe that no one aside from brave individuals with wealth are stepping up to the plate. It has the effect of erasure of good people who do this shit for little to nothing, and also helps to entrench laziness, inertia, and a bystander effect. "When are people going to do something about this?" The answer is people already are. Go join the party.
