For all those who used to be staff members, you all know full well how incredibly draining this topic is in general. In the past when it's come up, whatever situation was going on generally resolved or at least calmed down within a few weeks. We are currently on month six of this one. I, personally, have had a few different breakdowns trying to keep up with all of this. It's a lot harder emotionally than a lot of people think it is. We're trying our best and I get that it's not always up to our usual standard and I'm sorry for that, but you need to give us a little bit of leeway here.

However if we are made aware that members of ours are engaging in doxxing on any platform they are going to be banned from here whether that target is staff, a member, or not even a ResetEra member. Zero tolerance for people engaging in that.

That's fine and all but it seems like there are expectations beyond that when there really shouldn't be. The community thread being open shouldn't be contingent on what happens on a Discord server. Moderation should put action against those members and the new moderation rules should be enforced. What else can possibly be done?

Completely agree. I didn't even know a discord existed until a week or so ago; by the slew of people quoting/asking for discord it is clear they didn't know it existed either. To hold an entire community in lockdown because of the behavior of a discord server doesn't seem appropriate to me.

Pretty much, current actions pretty much just say bad actors can form a discord for any thread and doxx someone on staff to get any thread locked forever.

I agree here. Not sure why the thread being reopened is based on what they do. If someone is doxxing, ban them, that's more than fair. Seems a bit much to make what happens with the official topic overall dependent on however that server is run.

It remains to be seen what happens next, but the community thread in question is tightly linked to the discord in question. The OP of the community post links to it. The discord refers to itself as the PoliEra discord.

The community thread reopening is going to come down to whether or not that community is prepared to engage with us in good faith. Again, I'm not on it so this is hypothetical, but if they are saying one thing to our faces and saying horrible stiff about us elsewhere, if we are aware of that we aren't going to ignore it when judging if reopening the OT is going to be productive.

Personally I hope it reopens. If it does I hope it can be the kind of discussion and analysis I personally enjoy from that community instead of a lot of mud slinging, arguing, and attacking mods.

Which I'm sure some think we deserve, but it isn't helping the stated goals of that community or this site if that is what the thread is going to descend into whenever moderation and members don't see eye to eye on a ban against a valued community member.

It's honestly kind of baffling that plagiarize still doesn't realize sometimes you don't have to weigh in on everything.

Hello. So before I go about posting anything in this thread I feel the need to establish that I was (should be?) threadbanned. I made a report to the staff to let them know my threadbanned seemed to have been reversed and I was told that given whatever happened, I could post in here again if I wanted. I made the choice not to since it felt to me like I wasn't wanted in this thread... but now I have a question I'd like to be answered about this situation. But that said, if any mod here who wasn't the one who gave me permission to posts disagrees and wants to re-instate the previous threadban, I will accept that without argument (I did report the change myself after all, in an attempt to be fair and post in good faith).

Okay, so with that said, I'm a loudmouth with opinions and I can only force myself to not post for so long, apologies...

Before anything else, I want to extend my sympathies to Nep for dealing with this doxxing. I know we don't know each other, you probably don't like me, and my sympathies mean nothing to you. But I hate doxxing so much, it's hard for me to stay silent. Whatever point people felt they did or didn't have before, do they not see they render whatever position they have irrelevant by doing something so heinous? I refuse to accept people can be so ignorant to stoop to actual kiwifarms/4chan level shit and still think themselves morally superior to anyone else. I really hope you are able to stay safe, I hope the police take this seriously, and I am so sorry you have to deal with that.

And for what it's worth to anyone reading this, posting unlinked social media accounts is still bad. Doxxing doesn't begin and end at home addresses (though it seems that also happened here). It shouldn't need to be explained why that isn't fucking okay. Like, fucking hell, I've had my issues with moderation here before. But even if you think a particular moderator here is problematic, the moment you cross the line from talking on this forum about what they've done on this forum, to getting any level of personal with them, their off-site lives (be that irl or discovered social media accounts), you've become the villain. Maybe you don't see that, but that itself is a problem. This behavior is so toxic, so dangerous, it's ruined lives before. This is harassment and when you behave like this, you forfeit the right to your original complaint and you poison the water for anyone else who may have wanted to have that discussion in a more mature and healthy way. Shame on you.

Anyway that's not actually why I'm posting here again, I just had to get that off my chest as someone who was lurking this situation the past two days.
What I actually broke my "don't post there even if the ban is removed" silence for is seeking clarification on this part of the new rules:

In addition, we are going to start coming down on random drive-bys in sensitive threads. These issues generally pop up when people get too heated and don't think enough about their language and so by hitting inflamed drive-bys we can avoid the situation in it's entirety and bump the level of discussion in said threads. Essentially, if you want to post in a sensitive thread you will need to come with more than "fuck x" if you want to avoid getting hit. In order to help facilitate this we will be setting a minimum word count in sensitive threads somewhere between 20 and 50. This will, at the very least, force people to post complete thoughts and engage with each other and the topic in a more thoughtful way. We will also look at further adjustments depending on how these work and the needs of the community.

So people seem to mostly be praising this. I think because what everyone is thinking about are the "fuck Joe Biden" style of posts. But I guess my concern is over what counts as a "sensitive thread" and what counts as drive-bys, especially if there's a word count minimum now. So my thought initially goes to something like... a new anti-trans law passing. A lot of posts will happen in there of a "fuck these monsters, everyone please stay safe out there". It may not be a deep post that contributes to an overall conversation but I think those posts are doing a lot of things. For one, they are letting people have an outlet for their emotions. Seeing that kind of news can cause a visceral reaction in people and it's hard to keep those words to oneself when they need an outlet. But those posts also help keep that thread alive, getting replies, more visibility to the issue. Plus it might be some kind of small comfort for people to see there are others who care. So while those posts might not be adding much to any conversation, I do think they are contributing in other ways.

Of course, that situation might not be deemed "political" in the way these rules to be established, but it's just one example. I guess if this must be phrased as a question, is this word count minimum rule going to be something followed to a tee or will there be leeway? If some news comes out about a new tragic event in the Israel/Palestine situation, are posts expressing sympathy, shock, horror, support for victims, etc. not acceptable? If they fall under 20-50 words or what have you, will they be actioned? Is it better to just not say anything about anything to do with world politics, the election, or anything of that nature unless we're actively looking to contribute to an ongoing discussion/debate?

Not trying to come down on this rule or anything, I think I understand the type of post you're all trying to put a stop to and clearly there's support for this rule, just seeking more clarification/elaboration on it if that's possible. I know you're all dealing with a lot today and this video game forum has decided it's moderators need to know the perfect way to handle one of the most complicated and tragic political nightmares of our lifetime, so no pressure if there's other things that are more pressing.
