Apathy is the biggest adversary Democracy has always had when voting isn't compulsory. Getting folks who don't normally vote (either due to apathy or suppression) and making them reliable voters to campaign at is hard. Non-voters or once in a while voters aren't who campaigns will target because there's no guarantee they'll show up at the polls. They'll focus their limited time and money on those they know will show up.

The best thing we can do locally is make it easier to vote.

I know, it's just frustrating. I believe if everyone voted, Dems would win by a landslide. And I believe progressive policies would be voted in faster. Because I genuinely believe that when it comes down to it, most people recognize what is right and would make the choice, if forced, to support progress. But then I guess like 1/3 of the country is just too lazy or clueless. Although I'm not sure how you can be clueless in this election.
