I met up with an old friend group recently. Saw a shift over the years. From the late 2000s, when slurs were fired from the hip. To late 2017, early Trump term and the wake of metoo, everybody acted super progressive. Almost tense. Now, its course corrected somewhat. No hard slurs, but like, less stressed about being insensitive here or there. Coincidentally, some gave up smoking and got into fitness/body fascism.

That’s not to say I think they’re cheering on Joanne. They’re more, to quote Melania’s jacket, “I really don’t care. Do you?” They care about their family, community, immediate life. Not hate speech laws about trans people in Scotland and what the Harry Potter writer thinks. I think people took stock of how any of this shit matters, much less improves their lives.

We need to remember that most normal people don't use Twatter and they certainly don't interact with the Resetera types online or in person, let alone frequent a hate site dedicated to doxxing and putting staff lives in danger. 

Most people's culture war knowledge comes from mainstream media. 

While #metoo and BLM stuff originally resonated, and with Trump leading the charge for the most obnoxious idiots in the right, it didn't take long for the leftist crazies to come to the fore and for people who didn't really do much wrong to start getting cancelled over pretty innocuous events.

That was the turning point for most people. Being associated with Trump scared people into line, but once he was gone, it became safer to say, "Hold on a minute, should we be cancelling someone over a joke that fell flat or a bad pickup line?"

DEI stuff is clearly on the outer now that boards are asking for a return on their investment. They were sold the line that more diversity would lead to higher profits and more growth, but that isn't materialising. Those unproductive parts of the business are being cut because they are unproductive.

The same is happening with the trans stuff. You couldn't say anything earlier because the threat of being called a Trumptard was very real. Once he was gone, people philosophically centre-left started to get braver and started calling out some of the anti-science and anti-women rhetoric of the extreme left.

My biggest concern if Trump gets back in is that all the progress back to the centre will get destroyed because anyone speaking sense will instantly be tarred and feathered as a Trump supporter.

The SNP dominates Scottish politics at the moment and is a very broad coalition that happens to have the social justice wing on top at the moment. The two other candidates in the last leadership election were against the gender recognition bill, for example.

The only real consistent position among their base is support for Scottish independence, and that covers all kinds of positions, from the fuck the English lot, to socially conservative Scottish identitarians in the rural Highlands, to the ones who just want to keep the Tories out, and people who don't actually want independence but think it's a good line to take to get a good deal for Scotland from Westminster.

I spend time in the Highlands for work and they're pretty close to the rural English in terms of socially conservative views, but they're Scottish nationalists so vote for the Scottish nationalist party.
