this deserves a lore page but it's a sequel to the FF16 sales thread where a lot put their baskets in FF16 failing commercially.
It wasn't expected that Rebirth would underperform,, especially not against FF16. And this forum had many members egging on the previous mainline game (FF16) released 9 months prior and it turns out it sold better, so there's a bit of a 9/11 situation for the fandom because it doesn't fit any pre-established narrative of "real FF" triumphing over the "fake FF", and we had multiple threads about how "word of mouth" and "critical reception" will carry Rebirth upwards, which so far it didn't.

This is coming from the coattails of the latest FF before that having articles like this

So the dissonance is in full force lately. That the one that was written as a failure before it even came out ended up having a better commercial result despite being written off as being a disgrace to the franchise and its identity.

There's also the dimension of Rebirth being bigger and better and yet not managing to escape the expected sequel drop-off unlike Spiderman 2 and God of War Ragnarok. Basically the JRPG sells like a JRPG, and that's the issue.

The story came on the most recent episode of the Amazing Spider-Talk podcast, an interview between host Dan Gvozden and writer Cody Ziglar. Ostensibly there to promote Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Spider-Punk: Arms Race, Ziglar gets into his career on both sides of the fence, writing for the She-Hulk TV show and how that got him gigs co-writing the Beyond era of Amazing Spider-Man and eventually Miles and Hobie.

A lot of that involved working closely with Zeb Wells, the current writer of Amazing Spider-Man and the writer of the issue where Ms. Marvel dies. As Ziglar tells it, the request to kill Kamala and resurrect her as a mutant came from Feige, the president of Marvel Studios.

"It was funny watching when the whole Kamala stuff was going down," Ziglar says in the interview. "He (Wells) had told me months before the plan, which was, Feige was like, 'Hey, I don't do this very often but, can you please do this to make things in line with Marvel because we have some stuff we want to do with Kamala,' so he (Wells) was like, 'F***, I'm the guy that drew the short straw? People are going to be very mad that I have to kill Ms. Marvel."

Marvel PR did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

I don't understand why it had to be done in a Spider-Man comic where she was barely involved and why she had to have a bunch of white people standing around her body looking sad instead of idk, her diverse supporting cast of family and friends that are important to all her stories. and it never had to be done that way, they just wanted a shocking "death" to put in a Spider-Man comic for extra buzz.

For those who haven't heard, there's an unlicensed Joker movie currently playing in a limited number of movie theaters. This is a not a parody that makes obvious hints at DC characters but doesn't uses the trademarked names or designs either. Rather, it's a retelling of the Joker origin story that uses well-known characters from the Batman universe.

The story? The Joker decides to start his own comedy club where he meets and befriends the main antagonists from the Batman universe (Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Penguin, etc), realizes they're either transgender or a drag queen (the movie wasn't clear), starts a romantic relationship with Jason Todd who claims that Batman is a pedophilic rapist, and gets his giggles from a prescription drug that makes its users happy.

The movie is unfortunately terrible, relying on pot humor, myriad DC references, and jokes about their nonexistent budget instead of funny comedy, and the draw that I was watching something illicit soon gave way to boredom. But who cares about that? It's wild that this movie exists. How did DC let this happen? And will we see more movies that defy copywrite restrictions?

Let's be really real, there's people from this thread who have used this sort of reasoning to play whataboutism and outright dismissal in regards to actual nazis in other parts of the forum. I've gotten PMs from users about how their favorite twitter nazis aren't really all that bad because they criticize Israel and how we should allow them since they're a good learning resource. We've had people using the situation in Gaza to essentially justify ethnic cleaning in other parts of the world. A dear friend of mine literally fell all the way down the rabbit hole recently, using the sort of reasoning on display to justify it. If you think this shit hasn't been getting out of hand then you haven't been paying attention.

We'll undo a few of the bans, but you guys really need to realize how bad things have been getting recently. There's a difference between criticism and some of what has been going on in the last week or so.

I remember hearing about this movie not long after I realised I was trans when it was basically just a shitpost being thrown around on twitter, and hearing about it being actually worked on was the coolest thing in 2021 back when the world felt kind of nice to be trans in.

now I'm really sad I didn't make the joker baby thread I was going to make after seeing it on Friday, seeing this thread portray it as a crappy non-parody rather than what it is: outsider high school drama class art.

This post is going to have spoilers in it. I'm not marking them, skip this post if you don't want spoilers.

It was an incredibly powerful movie for me. I cried four times during it. Coming of age stories that are written by, made by, and starring people who can't act do not get shown in movie theaters. So many moments in their life were moments from mine. The monologuing. The bad haircut. The combination of furious indignation and complete detachment at the same time. Yes, it uses anti comedy as a framing mechanism and as material because being deliberately funny is hard. But it is undeniably a parody of the joker and harley and Batman and dc and all that. And it's goofy and dumb and incredibly serious and beautiful and ugly.

But you know what? It's the utter disrespect, OP. The main character of the movie was a youtuber who uploaded this for some reason. He said so over and over again. He tells the woman he's the joker, baby. Did you leave before he's the joker baby? Or did you sit on your phone the whole time? Your summary of this movie is like calling brokeback mountain a stupid story about cowboys who find mountains sexy. You have missed everything that made this movie meaningful, and you've done so in a particularly innocuous way with your 'taste' in 'quality'.

If you actually watched two minutes of a youtuber hamming it up in a goofy, weird, vulnerable, no budget way, and what you took from it was "terrible movie about a fat kid who likes the joker a bit too much", I feel so sad for you. I hope you don't tell any people you know what you thought of the movie.

Worth mentioning that a large part of this process isn't about recruiting new followers.
I would imagine they have a very, very low conversion rate for knocking on someone's door -> getting them to join their church.

It's more about reinforcing the bond between the proselytiser's connection to the church. Send them out into the big bad world to get 100's of doors slammed in their faces, often with some kind of "f*** off" shouted at them, then come back to their church(/cult) where the people are friendly and kind.
