Why change your mind and delete the post? There's so much opposition to this feature. Why not at least consider the suggestion of letting this feature be driven by users, rather than the staff?

Hmm... I'm not sure what's going with the sudden change of opinions, but personally I would like to see the feature have a genuine trial run. It's only been three days, and we're all thinking of how the feature may hypothetically play out. I don't think there's any harm with seeing how it actually plays out over a few months at least.

Can you please just do some focus testing or try A/Bing this instead of going off your own personal vibes in the moment. You're a big site, it's the right thing to do to keep the site sustainable.

If you look for trouble you will find it. And that's exactly what this feature will do with next to no benefit.

I forgot to post in here when I saw the announcement banner, I think it would be a great feature if managed well. I think the distinct difference between likes and highlights would be how much likes can be abused in bad faith, while the chance of mods doing so is much lower, plus community still having input without giving us complete control.

The only concern I can think of is if it gets used in argumentative and heated threads, I'm a bit iffy on that front specifically because it could be taken as "taking a side" in an already heated and hostile environment and escalate it further, even if not trying to. But if it's going to be reserved to just promoting positivity and well-thought-out posts, I'm all for it. This site really needs to cool a bit, and the hostility is incredibly infectious and makes it hard to not feel charged at times, or amplify a bad day. More fun shit and promoting positive engagement and good faith is definitely needed.

The rest of the internet is completely controlled by corrupt algorithms that deliberately manipulate people into becoming chuds by giving them their harmful revealed preferences in order to spur a global united fascist movement to exterminate everyone who is not white, cis, straight and non-puppybrained yet you're all sitting here just wanting to put the staff more in danger rather than demand some basic human decency.

I still have Facebook for a few career field-related groups and some of the highlights of what I've gotten recently completely unrelated to anything I interact with: 

-Not even disguised violent fantasy about executing federal agents.

-Post blaming all of Boeing's decades in the making woes on DEI complete with a picture of a random black guy walking the factory floor. 

-Rando profiles screaming BUILD THAT WALL!!!  

-Andrew Tate worship and related content about those uppity bitches getting their comeuppance in their 30's. 

As far as Era goes I suspect the real objection is that it isn't their side's garbage being served up.

What's great about Nepenthe is that she's decided her entire personality is "fervent anti-capitalist" (to cover her racism) but she's never bothered to generate any conceptual understanding of capital. You can tell from her various posts that she thinks of it purely as cash money, so the Global South had to have this super wealthy peaceful past or else where would the whites get rich from? You look at everything she says about just video game or media companies and you can tell she has no understanding of the industry from the business side at all. So it makes sense to describe a massive public corporation as "white-led" because the CEO is a white guy. I doubt she could tell you how her own Rite Aid even operates in these terms, that it must have some big vault of cash somewhere that it piles up from charging people for things.

There's something very similar about B-Dubs vision for this highlight thing and really much of the forum in general. They instinctively hate the idea of things not being in the control of the powerful. Good things like "productive discussion" just flow down from on top, same as bad things like character design choices in video games. All of it planned, all of it intentional, all of it directed towards some clear morally based goal. Intents are made clear (somehow, even though it takes so much learning to see how these systemic forces operate) and either basic human decency or basic human cruelty leads directly to the achievement of those intents. So intent is the only form of judgement that ever matters. (Hence why you need to spend so much time uncovering the true intent of lying chuds by blindly psychoanalyzing them based on your own personal hangups.)

You can't trust the masses with likes or recommendations on YouTube because those will just be manipulated by "outside" forces towards the results they intend. Which is why it's so important for the "good" powerful to manipulate things towards their results first and with greater protection over their control. Now you can see the very massive danger in ever putting the staff at risk.

One thing I've loved for some time on that forum is how they're all ACAB, never talk to cops, never believe anything cops say, etc. Then the cops come out and say THERE A BIG THREAT EVERYBODY LISTEN AND MAKE SURE WE CAN FIGHT IT and they fill a thread full of absolutely believing it, freaking out about it and making lists of people the cops need to target. Then even years later you have idiots like Vonocourt claiming the incel threat around the Joker film was real because of some cop saying they're worried that stuff like The Dark Knight Rises shooting becoming normal so cops need more power. (And then interpreting a cop talking about blockbuster movies being targets as some kind of intrinsic to Batman franchise thing. Chuds love the Joker after all! It's funny, because they know and use the right words that break out of this mentality: "critical thinking", "media literacy", "transparency", etc. but use them as terms to bolster their ideology like they call other people fascists when they're the ones behaving like fascists.  It's probably subconscious, but it is meant to erode and undermine conversations that might threaten the ideology.  And when those words are just throwaway terms, people can't even engage in a constructive dialogue with each other because nobody agrees on what those words mean - they've purposely confused people by disjointing meaning from real words.
