Hello everyone. I was before in Neogaf, I hope you don't mind my mistake. I'm from Spain and it was the first time I've written in a North American forum, the thing is I chose very badly which of the two forums to choose xD

I got permabanned there for writing the word 'genocide,' and that's even though I used it in a subtle sentence that didn't even point directly to the state of Israel or direct USA financing. Anyway, I hadn't felt comfortable there for a while, especially because of the constant misogynistic comments. I hope to feel more comfortable here. Greetings.

I'm surprised no one in this thread has mentioned Coppola's sexual harassment of women on the set. I understand it's not linked to the quality of it as a movie, but I think it's important context, especially with all kinds of people celebrating him.

This person is outright calling for mass state violence against people for their thoughts including absurd tyrannical asset theft and imprisoning for the non-crime of not policing other people's thoughts. Then has the complete hubris to claim its others, including those responding to this kind of violent rhetoric, who are the "really dangerous" ones that makes things "depressing" while using dehumanizing rhetoric about them.

I get that you can have a negative reading on what I'm saying, I can see that. But at the same time, I don't really have anything beyond my word and no way to really prove it that if instead of Yasuke this was a white character, not only I would've had the same feeling toward it but would've felt even worse and would've had more of a problem with it. At least Yasuke is an interesting figure in that time period, if it was some white dude it would've been way worse for me personally.

Like I said before, after the CG reveal I expressed my disappointment in their decision and then moved on until now (thanks to the dismissal tone of the article's title), mainly because I thought Yasuke could bring some cool stuff to the story. But again, I can see the non-charitable read on what I'm saying is that I'm just having a problem with a black character being the main protag, and all you have is my word that this isn't the case.

There is no denying that a good portion of the people who have an issue with Shadows do sadly fall into that category, and specifically have a problem with Yasuke being a black person, but I guess my problem was (and is) in the framing from people that this is the only reason others might be disappointed in the fact that we got Yasuke instead of another Eastern Asian character.

That said, I do see where you are coming from and sadly I have seen that sentiment a lot as well overall.

I think there's some nuance to be had here. I don't think your disappointment is from the fact that the main character is Black so much as he's not Asian. Which is fair. There is no malice in this, but again when the only prescription for the issue is that Yasuke should not have been playable, that is inherently exclusionary.

Now, I don't necessarily think that exclusion is a bad thing in every instance (Like, no, y'all aren't getting a non-Black T'Challa), but I also think that exclusion doesn't hold equivalent weight across all situations. Excluding a hypothetical white samurai is not the same as excluding a Black samurai that actually existed, and the short form reason for why they aren't the same is "white supremacy." Ergo, we shouldn't treat them as such.

So yes, I believe you when you say you would've reacted the same to a white samurai as you did Yasuke. But even then I think equivalence is worth further examination.

I know it was mentioned before in this thread but, Nepenthe is doing the "aykshully historical accuracy in videogames is important" thing to differentiate why exclusion is good when it comes to one race, but not the other....Then brings up a historically accurate Marvel movie to prove her point (y'all aren't getting a non-black T'Challa) that it doesn't go both ways.  This is a very serious person.

I also think that exclusion doesn't hold equivalent weight across all situations.
