Long story short I met a friend for lunch today. It was nice. He paid the bill and I got the tip (as he is employed and I am not). Then, on the way out, saying our goodbyes, he dropped a bomb on me about a deep personal loss.

I couldn't let it end like that. So I offered to buy him a couple drinks at the restaurant bar so he could talk more about it and get some support, as it was obvious he didn't really want to go home yet and needed someone to talk to.

We had two double margaritas, each. My bill was $96. He covered the ($20) tip.

Is this normal? Is this what people pay for drinks in these places? It wasn't even a fancy restaurant, just middle of the road. Jesus Christ. I'm sticking to dive bar happy hours or drinking at home for the rest of my life.

I'm just flabbergasted that any place would see that as reasonable, but the whole bar was packed, so maybe I'm just a poor person.

I don't even have much else to add besides continued dismay and frustration how this genocide continues to get worse and worse with no accountability toward it at all and little we as ordinary people in the west can do about it. Feels like no matter how many time I help donate to causes or boost a friend's charity stream/bundle/etc, nothing good is coming out of it and people continue to die without consequences.

I also don't know what this says about myself and the mental state this war has inflicted on me, but at this point in the conflict with how much worse it keeps getting and how many horrid, horrid videos I've seen of children crying for their family or being deceased which broke me down over and over and over again, one of the latest videos from today (the horrific one showing someone holding up a beheaded baby) just didn't phase me like it would have before this war. It was yet another "oh god, why is this happening..." moment for me, but nothing that could make me cry or be surprised, because the eight months or so this war has gone on has numbed me to everything and completely shattered my view on what this world considers genocide, since world leaders sure as hell don't seem to care this is happening right on video, uploaded everywhere for people to see!

It is increasingly painful to feel so powerless as people in Gaza continue to get massacred in more brutal and blatant ways each day. I hate that what should be an obvious "oh THIS is the moment the world gets united and calls out Netanyahu" moment is likely to be yet another case of the US and UK continuing to back this genocide and giving the lamest, outright insulting lip service to victims of this genocide and their relatives. I genuinely dread tomorrow, solely because I know the US is gonna say something absolutely fucking stupid and ignore the ICJ, and I really, really want them to finally get off their ass and do the right thing. But hey, I'm in a state where every senator I know is so pro israel that any attempt to pressure them would be futile, so I once again, feel hopeless.

But then again, being on Reddit often, I've sadly seen way, way too many people who think the stuff going on in Gaza is somehow a good thing?!? Like I shit you not this one news subreddit completely went off the rails and sharing anything remotely negative about the IDF's actions get you banned and are deleted outright, while any news stories about the conflict that do make it onto the sub just get bombarded by some of the most hateful, racist comments I've ever seen in my entire lifetime, trying desperately to justify every action of the IDF. I am absolutely horrified to see such statements just get repeated as if it's normal to be so utterly vile, and that subreddit made me lose more faith in humanity than I already have. I'm just so glad this website does not tolerate that shit at all.

I don't know. If it wasn't for me not believing in an afterlife for myself i'd ponder if I even had the energy to go on in this awful world myself, but days like this do not help matters. (I'll be fine, but I hate that I have these thoughts) I can only just keep hoping for more and more pressure to be put on these monsters. I am only 26. I pray that I do not see anything worse than this conflict in my lifetime.

There is a lot of talk about the modern internet getting enshittified. I do agree with some respects. I'm also not a fan of the Meta monopoly of Facebook, IG, and WhatsApp.

However, one thing that I still think the internet excels is its original conceit--information.

I do this especially with hobbies of mine, not just the consumptive hobbies of media (movies, game, books, etc) but the more craft and skill based hobbies.

For example, I'm a cyclists and there's just tons of great cycling tips online, not just the basic stuff, but routes, touring ideas, etc.

I get way more information than the older media like magazines and books.

Recently, I've been reviving a drawing habit and just tons of great stuff there too. It really helps you get deep with your hobbies.

And not to diminish consumptive hobbies, I have a few, but it's always great learning of new niche entries in those. The irony is not missed that I'm posting this on a gaming forum lol.
