People don't seem to understand that oppression (and to a very large degree, prejudice) is fundamentally social. As you've said, when ... people's suffering is treated as "just a thing that happens" by the people in the situation, ... the people in a forum... The more people that treat a thing as normal, unimportant, expected, the more it persists. About two years ago I started writing at a new outlet. Mostly reviews, some other bits and pieces here and there. I can't get payed for my work which is totally fine for me, just the circumstances of my life. It's not a "for exposure" kinda deal so whatever. Anyway:

This was a professional representing his company at a filmed corporate event for a possible award, publicly physically assaulting a colleague and then belligerently shouting obscenities at him, because his colleague "dissed his woman".

She wasn't directly named, they didn't use her imagery. Every character's name is fictionalised, so I don't see the case here. I think suing people harassing her is one thing, but I don't see the problem in someone telling a story from their perspective with fictionalised names, especially as this very personal story could not be told with any more fictionalisation without losing genuineness. Art needs to be allowed to do this, and I think if it wasn't for sleuths, journalists unethically reporting on that sleuthing, but especially her accepting money to go on TV and saying this was her, it couldn't be traced back to her.

Okay, so I didn't think we would have to issue bans in a thread about a racist. Like, I had a potentially naive hope that Era could navigate that discussion without issue until I woke up this morning. But I feel it's important enough in this instance to explain why we did so.

Simply put, Black suffering is expected. It is not just made invisible or downplayed; we collectively expect Black people to physically and psychologically suffer in all manner of ways, and we host this expectation without any regard for the possibility of Black people fighting back. Look at the innumerable conflicts and genocides in African communities and diasporas we do not actually talk about compared to other countries and communities. Look at the ways in which we reflexively appeal to pacificism when Black people are attacked.

You may ask, well why do we do this? It is because Black suffering is a significant material basis for the way in which our society functions. The US and Western Europe, and you could make the argument current world affairs as a whole, literally cannot exist as they do today if it is not on the back of centuries of brutal suffering and exploitation of the African peoples. And from this material basis emerges centuries of cultural justifications for it: rampant dehumanization, myths about our pain tolerance, or even just an inability to give a damn or becoming numb to seeing it over and over again.

So, in a conversation where someone rightfully points out that the only person in this situation who actually got hands put on them is a Black man, that while the white girl has endured emotional suffering, the Black man has endured both the physical and the emotional trauma of the moment...why would you get mad at that? What is it in you that is offended when someone points out that the Black person was the biggest victim in a given situation, and that his pain has been collectively overlooked? Why was it overlooked? Would you have overlooked it if it was another minority?

I have made no bones about how I feel about the political inclinations of this forum, but this is a moment to lay them bare: Era has light years to go when it comes to just seeing Black people as people worthy of protection from violence, as people who do not deserve to have to take violence from white people "with grace and dignity" by just not doing anything about it because that disturbs the status quo, to fundamentally understand that Black people's suffering is- unlike most other groups- uniquely and fundamentally paramount to the maintenence of Western supremacy, and that there are long conversations about the contradictions that exist to be had if you in any way consider yourself an anti-racist ally.

Sorry. You don't and never will have any ground to stand on to get in your feelings that someone pointed out that you had more sympathy for a white girl who was embarrassed than a Black man who was physically assaulted. Not until this system is broken. Take this time to do some questioning and introspection.

I would not mind that much if the character was not hyper fetishized to begin with since their conception. Testament feels way more honest in the Queer representation part.

Sleepaway Camp is the opposite of this thread, it's aged beautifully and the only way it got made in the 80s was because it flew way over everybody's heads. "Angela" is driven mad because he's a boy being forced to live as a girl, and the other campers and counselors are grotesque parodies of "gender roles" (every male is dumb and aggressive, every female is catty and stuck up).

Angela's the villain, but there's such a thing as sympathetic villain - most people have sympathy for Mrs. Voorhees having had her son drown in Friday the 13th, for instance.
