I’m pretty out of touch about modern western games. Did see a story recently about fucking insane budgets for last of us 2 and similar. And damn near every game ships broken with a roadmap to be playable. And there’s some indie LEGO Battlefield game blowing up in popularity because I guess that franchise has been in the toilet for ages. So much of the AAAA business doesn’t seem sustainable.

And then Nintendo goes and puts out Tears of the Kingdom...

I’m pretty out of touch about modern western games. Did see a story recently about fucking insane budgets for last of us 2 and similar. And damn near every game ships broken with a roadmap to be playable. And there’s some indie LEGO Battlefield game blowing up in popularity because I guess that franchise has been in the toilet for ages. So much of the AAAA business doesn’t seem sustainable.

The pay off is great though. Most businesses and products work with single digit margins and a hit game has a great ROI and can earn more money in the long run with DLC, in-game currency and Season Passes. Plus thanks to digital distribution the scaling and distribution costs are lower than ever. 

It is also not necessary to break the bank, that's just something the likes of Sony do with all their games. 
Sony is a special case because they just want to increase PlayStation revenue and marketshare overall. So the cost of the game pales compares to people buying the console, controllers, online subscriptions etc. . They also think that Xbox is on its last legs (and they could be right) and that they can 'own' the AAA console market. Because Apple, Google, Amazon and others have given up on launching a competitive console for different reasons. Nintendo plays in their own pond and doesn't really care what Sony does anymore and Sony is fine with publishers making money on Nintendo platforms so they can keep the lights on while they develop AAAA+ games.

The bigger problem than cost is 5+ year dev cycles. If development takes such a long time it becomes very difficult to keep a team staffed and focused.

Yes. I’d even say early 30’s is a young adult. Especially in the later generations. Adulting only really starts late 20’s (when you start to really amass enough money for a house/perhaps children coming into play).

I've been monitoring the Pacer website for the last few days, hoping to break the news on here. But my mother had a fall today and in between icing her leg and clearing space so she doesn't trip again, I missed it. Weirdly this has brightened my day a bit, somewhat because I'm a gamepass subscriber, a bit because I felt the case didn't have much merit but also because it's another highpoint in the drama.

The way Dice has been mishandling Battlefield is truly a masterclass. And can't help but notice that this happened around the same time they started to go "woke". Maybe at that point they just started to ignore any and all player feedback or something because all those gamers are actually bigots.

DICE moved all their best engineers to engine development because EA wanted Frostbite to be their main engine for everything and FIFA/Madden had to ship every year.
Plus EA changed the direction of Battlefield a couple of times only to end up back at Battlefield every time but with less and less development time.

Left unsaid is that they’re worried about their favorite toy’s place in the marketplace. Sony relies on heavy-handed third party deals. While their first party offerings sell well enough, they aren’t gonna move units in a meaningful way. They’re aware that as the pool of major third parties shrinks, Sony’s market position becomes pretty tenuous.

Sony had almost 30 years to bolster their first party output, they haven’t, it’s on them if they lose their place.
