My mom is kind of the perfect example of what MSNBC has done to a lot of older people's brains. It's nearly impossible to have a conversation with her that doesn't end up derailed by politics/Trump/Biden. To the point it's gone from just an annoying focus and moreso into troubling territory. For instance yesterday I went to my parents house for a dinner they were hosting for my cousin, who is moving out of state soon. She brought her boyfriend and their young daughter. The boyfriend is in his late 20s, black guy from Detroit (the hood, not the nice parts lol).
My mom interrogated him about the election and was asking if he planned on voting. He gave what I thought was a pretty basic answer you'd expect from his demographic: he's gonna vote for Biden but doesn't like either candidate, and wishes he had another option. A normal person would react to that by saying ok cool, and then move on. Instead my mom went on a rant about how he has no choice but Biden so complaining isn't constructive, Biden has done xyz, Trump is a crook etc. The guy got defensive and confused, since he already said he was going to vote for Biden, and explained he was a big Obama fan but just isn't a Biden fan (despite planning to vote for him). He then said no matter who the president is, nothing changes in the hood. At which point my mom said the hood doesn't change because people aren't doing anything to change their own lives, and then went on a rant about how Biden has benefited their 401k. ![]() Just thought it was a wild confrontation and really showed the disconnect between demographics. My parents are black too obviously but are well off. Their house is probably the nicest house he's ever visited, in the nicest neighborhood he's probably ever been to. I can't even fathom someone talking about 401ks to a guy who is working random low pay jobs while trying to figure out what he wants to do in life. My mom lives in a bubble where Biden is treated like he's Obama but when you turn off MSNBC that's not reality. Even in the uber blue county they live in, it's not true. Most of Biden's support boils down to people who like him more than Trump, or who hate Trump, or democrats who are just voting for their guy against the other guy. You should be able to acknowledge and see that unless you're in an information bubble, which is what MSNBC has done. (for the record, I generally like Biden) 5 users liked this post: Uncle, Boredfrom, killamajig, Gamegirl Nostalgia, Nintex

My half-unironic theory of why people rally behind Trump and Taylor and such in 2024 is because, for better or worse, they represent a national identity. Gaudy, yes. But people can look at them and say “that’s America.” This at a time when you see people rioting in the streets waving flags for other places and identities. When people are confused about who they are they latch onto these extreme parodies for some sense of direction.

This was on during Halftime but I don't know why it's not on Biden's own channel:

What's the argument for why I should take a "pundit" seriously if they're admitting to never having done that before over seven years later?
