If you want me to assume your meaning about the refinery it's that you're trying to frame me as being pro-waste and anti-clean-water because I don't think hundreds of millions should be harmed out of some cult nonsense that won't even change what they're dishonestly claiming to be concerned about. Even though this is completely irrelevant to the conversation and is just an attempt to falsely accuse me of something so you can browbeat me about it.

They're talking about the Just Stop Oil people, they're saying "stop oil", they're not criticizing any of the insanity. These people do not support "alternative fuels that will eventually lower oil dependence" (especially since they only support alternatives that require fossil fuels but I digress) they want the immediate cessation of all fossil fuels usage globally. This isn't some nuanced position you have to read between the lines, they want hundreds of millions of people if not billions to die off immediately because they think humans are a scourge on the planet. They don't hide this, they say it. That thread is full of it. That guy said "everyone agrees" with this position.

If you're saying that when they say "stop oil" they actually just mean "make life better" than them saying "stop oil" is meaningless and there's no reason for them to say it. I'm not going to assume they mean something moderate and nuanced when they're talking about the end of the world because they could just say that if they mean it. Where should I draw the line at assuming everyone actually means something reasonable when they say insane things? That when you smear Zack Snyder's Academy Award winning Justice League that you actually mean it's one of the finest achievements in cinematic history?

So, it seems like I’ve joined the One Last Continue crew, and this is supposed to be an introduction. Like all good or mediocre introductions, I’ll begin mine with a quote. When faced with having to change his way of life according to new rules set by a publicist, Sports Night’s Dan Rydell says, “I’m not a war correspondent for Radio Free Europe, but I do take what I do seriously…” That seems to be my attitude about, well, everything. Yes, these things we love are games – we can never, ever forget that – but damned if we shouldn’t treat them like we would any other important cultural artifacts.

Yes, I’m a little pretentious. Yes, I’m from the east coast. Yes, I did just quote an Aaron Sorkin show (we covered this, I am a little pretentious.) But I believe entirely in a synthesis of consistent, logical critique and an acceptance that when we play games (or experience any art and media, really) we emotionally react in a way that is often ineffable. Also, I think I’ve bought way more Koei games than anyone who wrote that has the right to.

I’m really excited to join the OLC team, and I hope to make you excited to have me. We’ll see how that goes.

Level 1-1: Begin!

It’s introduction time!  My name’s Phil Caron, and I’ll be your guide through One Last Continue.  I’ve been playing games as long as I can remember, ranging all the way back to playing the DOS version of Super Winter Olympics in the late 1980s.  Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been intrigued by the myriad of ways video games can work as an entertainment, narrative, and artistic medium.  My love of the medium has been with me for years, and it’s because of this that I chose to start this site.

My main focal points in gaming have been, ever since I was very young, RPGs and fighting games.  While I certainly play games in other genres, the vast majority of my gaming purchases fall into those two categories.  I currently game on all three current-gen consoles, as well as the PSP and DS handhelds.  Sadly (to some), I’m a Mac guy, so PC games aren’t quite on my plate at the moment…

As administrator here on OLC, I’ll primarily be providing editorials and reviews, along with hands-on impressions of the newest games.  I hope you enjoy the site, and I hope to see more of you all in the future!
