This is unsurprising to me, and will always be an element in anything that could be construed as opposing the actions of the Israeli government. The entire protest in this case is ill-conceived, though; there's a time and a place.

For anyone who has grown up in the Muslim world, they're likely no stranger to it. You hear some truly wild and revolting conspiracy theories about Jews across ethnic and national lines that can make QAnon look sensible. People with zero connection to Palestine or Palestinians are more than happy to use them as ammunition in the greater "culture war" with no regard for them beyond how much scenes of brutality can be milked.

Like with 9/11, I can criticize American foreign policies that arguably created the material conditions for opportunistic terrorists, and I can criticize the disproportionate response and unjustified human misery inflicted thereafter. That doesn't mean I have to praise Osama bin Laden.

The problem with the Hamas October 7th attack was the disproportionate amount of violence and brutality against civilians.

Palestinians do have a right to resist against an occupying force and can engage in armed struggle to free themselves from the bonds of domination, but it must target the occupying force, in this case the IDF and Israeli government. October 7th was a violent attack against Israel that disproportionately harmed civilians by brutal methods.

This line of argument effectively states that Hamas is a legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. But it's ridiculous to equate an ordinary Palestinian with Hamas or claim they're a follower of Sinwar.

Yes, the problem with October 7th was that Hamas brutally killed and captured Israeli civilians. No shit, dude. October 7th was a violent attack by a rogue terrorist entity that's wholly separate from today's ordinary Palestinians. An entity that doesn't give a single, solitary fuck about Palestinians or their future, as evidenced by the own leader's words. A leader who argues that the more civilians die, the better Hamas' own standing is. That's what someone should argue.

Because otherwise, we start assessing which civilians are directly participating in hostilities on behalf of a belligerent (Hamas) in an armed conflict ... and that assessment (improperly) seems simpler. Some cases are easy: like the "journalist" who held Israeli civilians captive and, by doing so, lost his protected status and was lawfully targeted. No one's shedding a tear for the "civilian" who kept Noa hostage, nor should they.

But most people are ordinary, regular people suffering under Hamas rule and Israeli occupation and, depending on the facts and circumstances, are victims of IDF-launched international humanitarian law violations. They are unambiguously victims. Tying them to Hamas in any way does them a disservice, both ethically and legally.

Woke means the same thing it has meant since the modern usage of the word was adopted, what's tiring is people pretending that it doesn't mean anything because it was applied in a scenario they disagree with.

It encompasses everything done for the sake of representation, inclusion, and sensitivity, and this does include making female characters masculine, flat, and what have you.
