I love my local cinema. It's a small and cosy Picturehouse with progress pride flags on either side. The staff there are so lovely and they all know me well by virtue of how often I visit, and I've come to know and see a couple outside of there as well. They're really lovely and creative. For Anatomy of a Fall they created a masking tape crime scene body outline, for Jurassic Park they had a blow up dinosaur among a load of house plants, LotR triple bill had the entrance to the Mines of Moria painted on the door to screen 1, EEAAO had all of Screen 2's doors covered in googly eyes. Currently there are Ghibli drawings everywhere to celebrate the Boy and the Heron. I love watching films in the cinema, and I love watching them there.

Most people don't want to be the first person to speak up about something, especially if the misconduct in question didn't happen to them directly. It's not really ethical to air someone else's dirty laundry or put a target on a victim's back by speaking up FOR them without ensuring that's what they want you to do. And so in cases like these where you have a guy who's clearly had a history of pushing boundaries (and pushing PAST boundaries, as we see with the behavior shared in these exposes) with a lot of different people, there's a lot of different little stories that on their own make for "see? I told you he was bad" content online, but aren't necessarily shareable, or wouldn't really get traction if they were shared unless a larger flare-up took place first.

For example, one of my old friends once casually told me that a certain famous guy was really into her and would give her all kinds of free stuff if she sent him sexy pictures. I sat on that for like a decade because she didn't seem bothered by it, and it wasn't my place to run around broadcasting it, especially since the two of us had fallen out of contact and weren't close anymore by the time said famous guy's behavior really got under the microscope, so it would've been making the whole thing about me rather than making it about her.

I personally used to hang out with Neil online for a long time so this specific news hurts me personally, but I would be lying if I said I'm shocked that he made "horny for goth girls" a part of his personality well into old age. Sigh. Sometimes the signs are there and it's just hard to see them.

They're scared because they vote. If they didn't vote, they wouldn't care. You play to the people voting as you don't want to lose your job. You lose or keep your job based on the people voting.

Liberals also vote, mostly liberals of color. Indeed, they are consistently some the highest-voting demographics of this country; Democrats routinely pull the popular vote in the national elections. It's white centrists and independents (aka, embarrassed white conservatives) who consistently do not vote, but when they do they are just as liable- if not more so- to break for Republicans versus Democrats.

It also doesn't follow the general adage always bandied about here, that Republicans fall in line and Democrats fall in love, aka a conservative will vote for a Republican no matter how much they hate them, while a liberal is more likely to base their vote on whether or not the candidate actually fulfills certain philosophical criteria. So then, if we believe this, then it doesn't follow that conservatives withholding their vote is a meaningful threat. Because a population that believes it must vote for a certain Party no matter what is a population that the Party effectively controls, because there is nothing the Party can actually do, no amount of promises they can break, no amount of corruption and depravity they can engage in, to meaningfully depress the vote. Because the voters have no choice, you see. But this isn't what we're plainly seeing. Republicans are more likely to capitulate to Trumpers than Democrats are to capitulate to even barebones leftists.

So I disagree. Republicans aren't scared of their constituents because they vote. On the contrary, consistent voting is a sign to a politician that they've got you by the balls. No. Republicans are scared of their constituents because these people are armed, and they're crazy, and they are more than willing to use their arms. They call their offices and leave some of the most vile shit imaginable on voice messages. They show up at town halls mad as fuck. They will doxx you, and your partner, and your children, and your extended family. On top of that, even the FBI has admitted time, and time, and time again that the right-wing is not only more violent in general, but specifically is more prone to planning and carrying out terroristic acts aimed at large civilian and governmental targets. The most we got on the left data-wise are terroristic acts aimed at animal testing labs. Yeah, Democrats are totally quaking in their boots at the environmental activists going after beagle-testing labs. Whatever will they do about the PETA nutscases, y'all?

Seriously, it wasn't the left who stormed the Capitol, even though by all rights Black and Indigenous folks should've been burnt this shithole country down if we are basing the validity of direct action against politicians on objective grievances. J6 certainly wasn't liberals- you all can hardly be bothered to be social with your neighbors, to say nothing of organizing anything in the way of any kind of political action. Talking to and cooperating with people? Gross. I'd rather stay inside my quiet suburban abode and play video games.

It was fucking conservative whites who did that shit. Because they are armed. And they're crazy. And they're willing to organize, even in a violent manner.

And note: I am not saying that we need to start bombing offices. I am saying that we fundamentally do not pose a threat to Democrats. Liberals vote blue no matter who and then go home. Liberals do not organize because they have completely ceded all of the tools of organization to either their moral enemies or to demographics they really don't respect (aka, actual leftists, Black, Indigenous, and Global South peoples) and thus have taken their use off of the table by association. They're certainly not actually reading basic organizational theory; they're caught within a loop of nihilistic doom-scrolling and then whining about the end of the world. Yes, nothing says "energized political party" like the very people who claim to care about your rights also insisting we all deserve to die because of global warming.

Liberal constituents are largely a joke, a milquetoast, pacified people who insist on giving collective power to the elites instead of themselves, who follow instead of trying to lead, and even Democrats know that. That's why they don't care to do what you want them to do.
