Saw a few people banned earlier for making inflammatory comparisons and I don't think it was necessary. This whole situation with Biden should be a wakeup call that many of the flaws that allowed Trump to take over the Republican party, and still allow him to appeal to fence sitters and have a chance to win, are not unique to them. Human beings are social creatures and institutions, parties, movements are built off of the ways that we group together and organize into hierarchies. One of the ways we do that is through the silencing of dissent, keeping people in line, sweeping unpleasant things under the rug. Accusing those who criticize our leaders of having ulterior motives or being otherwise morally deficient. If we want independent voters to see the Democratic party as defending democracy and democratic norms, we need to be wary of anti-democratic behavior in our own ranks as well. I think it's one of the big reasons the drama around "hiding" Biden has been so damaging and demoralizing.

Yes, I completely agree. The democratic party is not a holy object that can do no wrong. If they slide further towards say racism, or hiding problems, or supporting genocide, then that needs to be able to be called out and compared too.

Trump might seem exceptionally terrible, but I learned from earlier moments in history just how banal evil can be. How quickly, especially with cowards surrounding leaders, things can get worse. The democratic party definitely does have people or supporters that would do things way over the top to keep the party line going. It's a sobering lesson, not something to ban people for. This feels like part of a larger conversation around tone-policing in this forum.

If you want your party to be more disciplined, you need the mechanisms for it. But it doesn't work without a very clear purpose, and that purpose can't be negative (like stopping Trump). You can't radicalize a party or rally it behind unified decision being the quintessential "better things aren't possible, we're just fending off the worst" party.

I mean, my point is I hate Lenin because he fumbled one of those world changing moments. Instead of being a statesman, he chose to be power hungry and do a coup. A democratic Russia, controlled by a series of socialist parties in a functioning democracy, could have been an example to the rest of the world and would have eliminated so many bad faith arguments against Marx's ideas. Instead it became an imperialist power that went on to invade and conquer its neighbors. WW2 wouldn't have turned out how it did, the Cold War didn't need to happen, "socialism" didn't need to become a four-letter word in the west. But it all happened the way it did because he chose his own personal power over doing the right thing.

Biden is likely facing one of those moments right now. A moment where he has to choose between his own personal power and doing what's right for everyone. These moments don't come along a lot, these moments where a single person can choose the flow of history, and I'm just hoping he doesn't fuck it up.
