If I recall correctly the situation only escalated when the refused to leave the Dean's office, a place that I wouldn't exactly call public. 

Also such a dumb move. If you plan to get arrested in protest at least do it with a huge group, something that really catches eyeballs and newspapers. Five people getting arrested after being told to leave means nothing
