I'm a little confused by some of the reactions here lol. WBD is basically getting ahead of the curve by acknowledging the struggles of the linear business and potentially reducing the tax burden for future earnings. We all know linear is dying quickly with no going back.

While it’s clear we are not all accountants there is literally ONE post in this thread that actually understands the topic with zero replies acknowledging it. The rest are Zaslav yelling.

Goodwill impairment is often weighted against intangible assets, especially common after an acquisition (in this case, the valuation of acquired TV networks). While severe in the short-term and a balance sheet wince, this is a very wise move. On one hand, you could say the due diligence of the valuation done in 2022 was incredibly naive but also the writing was absolutely on the wall regarding the future of TV well before that. AT&T knew that better than anyone.

I am somewhat convinced this was the plan all along and they just did something super savvy for AT&T to offset the dwindling of linear TV.
