Cute. Posting an update because tomorrow I become a doctor (PhD) in Bioengineering and Data Science. It's wild to reflect on this terrible, long, rewarding salvation of a journey that was grad school during a wicked divorce and near homelessness. Bittersweet. I just finished my defense slides for tomorrow and it's surreal. I honestly thought I would die before getting this paper. Hair fell out in chunks. I lost 50 lbs in a year. I'm on so many meds I don't know what day it is and every day is a struggle. But I did it. Well almost. Tomorrow it's official. Thank you everyone for your support during my loneliest years.

I only read half of J.K. Rowling's first book. I never found her writing to be engaging at all. To me, her writing style came across as being a few notches above typical fan fiction. But that's based on my impression of her first book. Does her writing improve as the series goes on? And for anyone reading, how well does the Hero's Journey formula hold up, assuming that it's being utilized in the series at all.

I ask this because since Rowling has become such a lightening rod for discourse if it's possible if her series could simply lapse into irrelevancy over time. Again, I haven't read her books in depth, but I'm guessing that the Harry Potter's world building is nowhere near J.R.R. Tolkien or Robert Heinlein in terms of prestige. Are there any other contemporaries that come close to the Harry Potter series on the market today? I always thought that Rowling's kid witches trope was all gimmick but without any substance, not unlike the Twilight series.

The flaws in JK Rowling's writing were there from the beginning frankly. Harry was never bothered about living under the stairs and the stuff about his parents being dead, right at the start was just such weak worldbuilding. Then they get a magic train that goes through a wall, Joanne obviously didn't know there were no half platforms at kings cross when she wrote it.

Frankly, it has none of the twists of the gruffalo, it lacks the EQ of something higher order like Percy Jackson or Captain Underpants and I'd honestly say I learned more about story structure and character from The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which you should all check out if you haven't already, ending is badass.

They advertise Black Rifle Coffee and it's featured prominently in their kitchen even when they're just quickly passing through. I suspect that it's always like that which wouldn't suprise me because they're also anti-union. Shoving politics in their employees' faces doesn't seem to be a problem for them. They frequently talk about working conditions in studios but a union is somehow never the answer. I have some of their merch and looked for some of their newer stuff and stumbled upon a shirt that seems to be targeted towards boogalooers. The most damning things seem to come from their own lawyer. When he does videos from his Texas ranch he has cameos from a lot of far right youtubers. The predator reenactment and tiny gun short film are the best examples. Some of those guys have run for office and were so extreme that they couldn't even get a win in Texas.
