I don’t particularly care about Starfire or Miss Martian because both are aliens (and Miss Martian is a shapeshifter to begin with). 

The one that makes little sense to me is April O’Niel given that her whole name is Irish as hell. You could argue the same with Jimmy Olsen, but we got short haired tomboy Lois Lane so is okay.

Y'know what I'd like to see? Maybe let women write and direct an Alien movie. I feel like doing the same Alien concept over and over again despite always being filtered through a male creator's lens is kind of holding the franchise back.

I saw the trailer a week or so ago and was just like "this looks like every Alien movie ever", and the reviews definitely lead me to the same conclusion my brain made off of the trailer, heh.

I would argue the last thing ANY aging franchise needs is a rehash of a movie from the 80s with new actors shoved into the same old roles.

What they should be doing is seeking out new, talented, marginalized filmmakers with distinctly new perspectives on the genre to transform it into something more than "here's the old movies everybody likes and the badly-mangled horse corpse we've been punching for 20 years".

As long as the central metaphor at play in these movies is about sexual assault, pregnancy and the horror of your body being destroyed by an unwanted invader feeding off of your life essence, it feels hollow to have a bunch of men constantly be the people telling that story, over and over again.

Kinda seems like reviewers are mixed on what they want Alien to be after Ridley's lore dump duology (which was spectacularly awful). A "back-to-basics" film that shows appreciation for what came before sounds like a good enough palette cleanser for now*.

* As PlaSma and I concurred, a woman's touch is very much needed to bring some life back into the series. Horror is such a boys club, it's ridiculous. (Well, the whole movie industry is but especially horror.)

Back when I had Twitter, I had a really lovely back-and-forth with Dinga Bakaba (Game Director @ Arkane for Deathloop and currently Blade) around when the internet was lambasting Deathloop for having so many trailers at Playstation events (which I never agreed with since it seemed like a fairly normal amount of trailers to me lol), basically telling him and his team to keep their chin up since the game looks absolutely incredible and the final game will speak for itself (which it did.) I then later messaged him back with my pitch for a DLC for the game, which he really got a kick out of lmao.

Anyway, a really sweet and lovely dude who's very easy to root for <3

Harry Potter is the dullest franchise. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
