Change in the community isn't going to come from us alone since everyone needs to be part of that change and put in the work… but it's clear that those who are trying to highlight issues are being made to run out of steam or antagonized and that this hostility is ingrained in the community.

This place is less hostile than others, but it is still hostile. The bar is in hell after all. We can't change the industry alone but we also can't keep losing valuable voices in the community because it's more important to ooh and ahh over graphics and another Soulsborne than have mature conversations about the community we're all a part of.

 

See, comments like this is what I don't understand. What "discussions" do they want? That everyone just parrot the mod/protected members approved stance? Will any opposite view be allowed in these "discussions", or are they an automatic ban like they are 99% of the time? 
Please identity and make specific the "hostility" towards women so rampant on ResetERA. Is ignoring purposeful thread derails to talk about the game "hostility?" Is merely disagreeing with someone like Kyuuji "hostility?"

How many of you have related to feeling like you're either profiled, excluded, or mistreated for being "not enough" of one minority group or the other? What about people assuming you're one thing or the other, and not quite feeling at home in one culture versus another?

I'm half-Colombian, half-Danish, first generation American. I'm also a married bisexual who has experienced bi-erasure.

It feels like being in a duality situation in both my race and my sexuality leads to me feeling out of place or rejected pretty frequently and I'm wondering if other people relate to this? For example other mixed race people?

I'm used to it but in a way it stings every time I feel it.

For one, people look at my skin and make assumptions on what category or race I should belong to. I can't tell you how many times people (just happened yesterday actually) tell me "you don't look Colombian" (despite the fact that my Colombian family is about half light-skinned, half dark-skinned, and there are many light-skinned people in Colombia). And I'm like, what do you know about how Colombians should look? People make gross comments like this about other countries too, like French black people, or anyone that doesn't look like what people would expect from a stereotype, and it sucks.

One difficulty I have is that I speak Spanish and English fluently but back in Colombia everybody can tell that I didn't grow up there my whole life (differences in accent) so there's some rejection there. People can also tell that I'm half "something else"

Meanwhile here in America I've seen my family get mistreated for speaking Spanish and I've experienced people profile me and my family. It makes me feel estranged from people here sometimes too. People can tell I'm not "from here" either. I never cared about guns or American football and sometimes words like cul-de-sac and certain idioms confused me growing up and people teased me for it.

Again, it's the feeling of being estranged from both cultures because you're not "totally" one or the other. This happens a lot in gay culture. Straight people mistreat bisexuals like myself by assuming we're promiscuous or unfaithful because we like both sexes, or they think we're gross because we date the sex the opposite sex is not interested in. Meanwhile gay people will often discriminate against bisexuals and avoid dating them for the same reasons. I was actually cheated on before because someone assumed I was cheating on them because I was bisexual.

Anyway, back to Latinx problems: in addition to what I mentioned, I am very sensitive to being "far away" from Latinx culture. It's hard to describe but Latinx culture has very distinct mannerisms, hospitality, music, food, family/friend networking, and language that whenever you grow up in a family or environment that has that characteristic, it feels very homesick to be far away from it. Here in Seattle, I haven't yet found a Latinx community so I'm kind of homesick. But in contrast, Seattle is very Scandinavian so it's encouraging me to tap into that side of my heritage more.

When I went to Denmark a few years ago, I felt alien to it all because I never grew up there and I don't speak Danish. Of course in America people assume I'm just "white," and this has even led to people being openly racist to me with jokes or comments about Hispanics and immigrants thinking that I was someone "safe" to make that comment to.

I understand that being full black or full Hispanic or something else like that has its own major challenges, but I guess I just wanted to talk about how sometimes being at the intersection can be hard in it's own ways as well.

I'd also add that it's exhausting for the people who are hurt by these projects to constantly have to be the ones that have to make those all-encompassing posts or reminders about how shitty some people are, etc.

At some point it's easy to just be numb to it all because it feels like a constant battle. Especially back in the Cyberpunk days where it was obvious what was going on, which this forum thankfully eventually rooted out.
