Reframe this argument by saying that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was "an act of war" upon Nazi Germany's occupation and you'll see very quickly how this framing completely falls apart the moment you see those being occupied as human beings.

In May, Illinois State University officials arrested, suspended and barred from campus seven student protesters.

Earlier this month, a civil-rights lawsuit filed against ISU by protesters who call themselves the “ISU 7” was moved from state to federal court in Peoria. They allege they were unjustly punished for engaging in constitutionally protested political protest.

According to radio station WGLT, the students’ lawsuit alleges they were “issued interim suspensions and no-trespass orders with no warning.”


The ISU protests, which concerned the Israel/Hamas war in Gaza, were among dozens of campus protests, including the University of Illinois, last spring.

News accounts indicate the students entered Hovey Hall, which houses the president’s office, the morning of May 3 and stayed all day. They were informed at about 5:40 p.m. that the building would close at 6 p.m. and they should leave. After ignoring a request by the campus police chief to vacate the building, they were arrested about 7 p.m.

One of the seven is 40. The rest are in their early 20s.

“ISU 7” lawyer Sheryl Weikal alleged in a statement that her “brave students” clients were penalized for engaging in “peaceful protest at a public forum against an ongoing genocide.”

Weikal said that was inappropriate given that the “Dean of Students” had posted “the Israeli flag on social media.”

The lawsuit described ISU Dean of Students Andrew Morgan as being a “Zionist,” according to WGLT, and active in the role of “infringing” on the students’ free-speech rights.

Morgan, according to the story, posted an Israeli flag in October 2023 on his Facebook account, encouraged students to support Israel and had his picture taken with students holding an Israeli flag. On the surface, those innocuous actions appear to be well within the rights of any citizen.

The students seek reinstatement, payments of $50,000 each and an order requiring ISU to pay their legal fees.
