You're right to, that's certainly a big part of it. And the thing is, it's not even a right-wing chud-work or whatever boogeyman people want to pin it on. Apex Legends is a treasure trove of identitarian trinkets, and by all accounts is doing well in a great niche with no signs of slowing down.

You can have this stuff in your game, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it. Imagine if McDonald's included a big highlight in all of its advertising about how much potassium is contained in their food. Is it ok to have potassium in food? Yes. Do some people deliberately seek out potassium? I gotta assume yes. But no one is slavering for an opportunity to get a burger and fries at "The Potassium Restaurant".

Basically, too many modern game devs that really want their game to "send a message" or "be inclusive" don't know subtlety at all. They blare it out and beat you over the head with their "message" to an obnoxious degree. Then yell at you for being even slightly annoyed.

Same can be applied to audiences that are unable to read subtext and REQUIRE the message to be smashed over their ignorant head.

Hey, Days Gone is awesome! I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but its way better than the reviews, which I think reviewers were docking because the protagonist looked like a biker CHUD Trump voter.

Additionally, the entire discourse around this game has utterly destroyed the few vestiges of goodwill I had for this site. So many people are just so damn performative.
- People don't want layoffs, but they want entire studios to disappear because they didn't like a game
- People want diversity, but only if those characters are fuckable
- People say gameplay is king, then proclaim the jankiest fucking nonsense as the best thing ever and ignore legitimately great playing games
- People hate battle pass and microtransaction culture but won't pay for a mid-priced game

I follow hundreds of artists on twitter. When a new game or piece of media comes out, I'll reliably see a wave of art of whatever the most popular or striking characters are. It's like clockwork.

I never saw a single piece of fan art of this game. Not one. The designs just aren't good. They lack visual cohesion, both as individual characters and when considered as a whole.

I'm not sure if you know this, but there is still a millions-strong lgbtq presence on twitter, and that is represented very strongly on art twitter.

It'll be interesting if we'll see consequences from this four years down the line. I don't think any of those movies or games failed solely because they're woke or whatever, (like look at Valves deadlock, lots of inclusivity and doing gangbusters) but it seems like when you put inclusivity/diversity front and center about your product it puts it's on its back foot, something it has to overcome with other good qualities. The modern audience who will buy your game in droves because that one character is gay black and trans doesn't seem to exist. 
Meanwhile the "chud" audience who will buy your game solely because of sexy characters etc. isn't gigantic either but seemingly still a lot more tangible

Who would've thought that the quality of a game/movie/TV show is more important to consumers than the identity of the actors playing roles?

Apologies if this isn't the right place, but I wanted to take the temperature for creating a Sports Gambling or Sports Betting OT. Obviously this has become increasingly prevalent in the discussion around sports - there are at least 3 pretty active threads in the last week or so directly or tangentially about it. @Embiid

I anticipate this might be something not received well, given some of the responses in recent threads. I get that people might be sensitive to the accelerated encroachment of sports betting into their fandoms. At the same time, given how many active sports OTs we have, and what we know of the increasing rates of sports gambling, there are surely tons of users partaking in sports betting here on the forum as it's legal in 30 US states, with another 10 states considering legislation (according to Action Network), not to mention largely legalized and normalized in many countries where this forum has many users.

The goal and scope of the OT would be two-fold:
A place to discuss news and stories related to the topic (I understand some news would have individual threads, but I think it could focus discussion of certain stories)
An educational resource covering the following:
Odds and lines basics
Types of bets: Money lines, spreads, parlays, futures
Unit sizing
Value of tracking bets
Different Apps and books
Promotions, particularly sign up bonuses
What to watch out for: certain apps, Twitter/X cappers who follow suspicious patterns, parlays
Like I said above, taking the temperature here and I understand if this is something the mods would see as promotional or encouraging. I just see it creeping into certain threads and I would only expect that to continue.

Frankly, I get a little bit concerned at the off hand comments in sports OTs - things like people mentioning playing a lot of parlays (among the worst bets to make) or not understanding lines or odds.

I got a few posts of feedback (not from mods/admins) and incorporated those into the OT, with a focus on problem gambling and resources.  I posted twice in this thread within the last two weeks letting staff know I was planning on posting the OT, and responding to a user who asked about the status, all positive feedback I thought.

I made the below post in the last Community thread in March, and it seemed to be well received with positive and helpful feedback, if not explicitly endorsed. Wanted to let you know that I'm planning on creating a Sports Betting OT, likely next week or the week after. Timing seems right with the Olympics ending and American and International Football starting up, along with baseball playoffs and hockey/basketball soon after.

Any thoughts or concerns, please let me know.

Screw the haters, I know people want to downplay but I absolutely believe this game was a victim to the hate mob against it, sure people come up with other "valid complaints" but there is no real reason this game deserved the vitriol and disdain it got from the masses. We all know where that negativity stems from and it's not because of the lack of gameplay quality, there may have been other reasonings people came up with to legitimately dislike it instead of being part of that hate mob… but we all know why all those little complaints people had were magnified to the extreme and those people got exactly what they wanted because the general audience is more than happy to join in on negativity. Literally the majority of people were scared off from even trying this game because liking it would go against the narrative that had already been set around it and it was easier for them to laugh at it and tear it down.

Yes I believe this even affected reviewers going into the game with a negative mindset and not judging it on its own merits. Who would want to "overly"positively review this and deal with the online harassment from it? Not many people I think. Yes I do believe reviews got it wrong and this was a great game, I played a lot of it and experienced it. I wouldn't be surprised if some reviewers put less than a dozen hours in before concluding their verdict.

If Apex had dropped today, in today's climate, at a time when a bunch of super popular streamers (and an absolute shitload of players) weren't actively looking for a new BR to play, (and for $40, to boot), then it wouldn't take hold like it did back then - and you'd better believe that chuds would be moaning about it either way. If Apex had dropped today, and if the game came out at a different saturation point in the market, and if it was priced at $40 instead of free, and it was released at a time that there were other BRs to play, and it was made by the people who did the Rugrats games, and it was called Mavis Bacon Teaches Typing, and it was the late 80s when there were people that still were bad at typing, and if the game was shitty at teaching typing, and it uninstalled system32, then the chuds would be moaning about it either way, and 37 more people from Resetera would've been able to play the game instead of being influenced and completely mentally compromised by the chuds, like Resetera is now.
