Like, if it was any other game you guys would allow yourself a to speculate. How hyper weird has been the AssCreed Shadows discourse on ERA.

Since (y'all) are getting bored of The Malds saga, I'll try and inject some, ummm, intellectual discussion.

So this dude just made this comment regarding Assassins Creed: Shadows. Read the bolded part as I'm 99% sure he'll be banned for 'justifying racism', despite dropping a truth-nuke.

There's not a single positive comment under the Japanese Shadows trailer. Can't blame them. Like 90% think it's racist that the protagonist isn't a Japanese man and the rest doesn't want a woman to carry a weapon in public. It's sad

Ubisoft does not have any substantial explanation to the Japanese players regarding the AC Shadows's cultural appropriation, thus the decision not to face the affronted masses directly. Seems simple as that.

I love the Assassin Creed's series and have played every single title that's ever come out since 2007.

But having Yasuke as a protagonist is just foolish. I'm sure some people (most likely in the west) are against it because of racism. I think it's a dumb idea just because I don't see how you can play as Yasuke in the 16th Century without every single NPC in the entire game freaking out at the sight of a black man.

Has anyone here seen Shogun? Awesome TV series, I finished watching it yesterday. Nearly every single character except Lord Toranaga and Lady Mariko treat Blackthorne/Anjin like he's total shit and beneath them. And he's a white man. Blackthorne only survives because of the decisions and orders of a handful of ultra-powerful Lords.

Most of Japan, outside of the big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc... still have a problem with black people in the 21st Century. Plenty of YouTube videos alone, from black people, are proof of this. I don't see how Yasuke can wander around at all in 16th Century Japan without 99% of NPC's either 1, staring in horror 2, running away, 3, treating him with contempt, 4 trying to kill him as they do with Blackthorne/Anjin in Shogun.

Many on Era, and the /r/assassinscreed subreddit, use the tired old argument 'it's fantasy lol, u punch the pope lulz' and yeah, the AC series has plenty of stupid moments. But it also prides itself for relative historical accuracy. When you're wandering around in Egypt, Greece, old England, you DO feel like you're living in the times.

Actually, giving it more thought, I don't buy the racism-angle that Era likes to portray it as. Absolutely no one had a problem playing as Bayek in Origins or Aveline in AC III: Liberation.

People have been wanting an AC game set in Japan ever since the series came out and now that it's almost here, Ubisoft chose to go down the most immersion-breaking route, just to appeal to Western sensibilities and current identity politics.

Just feels like Ubisoft deliberately wanted to chase after controversy for publicity.

I'm thinking back at that diversity tool some movie studio released, I believe we also posted it here. One of the big throughlines of that was that it kept asking how your script is revolutionary, how it breaks the mold and does something groundbreaking for diversity. And I think it's exactly that line of thinking that leads developers to include "top surgery scars" or that making 50% of your game set in Japan about a black man will go over well. (when in all the other games the protagonist has been a native) and why every disney movie advertises it self with "starring the first nonbinary, gay disney character who is bald". They think this is the only way diversity matters. Having a game set in Japan about only Japanese people? How boring.

Then there's other cultural things where Ubisoft just keeps putting their foot in their mouth in a way the Ghost of Tshushima devs never did.

I loved the show and learnt alot from it. Wanna see something very funny?

Blackthorne and Lady Mariko had awesome chemistry. I felt they were really in love by the end.

But watch this interview with Cosmo Jarvis and Anna Sawai. Anna is cool, but it's almost impossible to believe Cosmo is the same actor who played Blackthorne. He is soooo nervous and shy. Watch the first 2 minutes at least:

One of my favorite things on Era is seeing an absolutely insane poster randomly act extremely normal. Here's FantasticToma giving an ELI5 about the controversy around AC: Shadows.

Upon checking, I'm a bit surprised the lead studio for AC:Shadows is Ubisoft Québec. The "Yasuke controversy" is something I would have associated more with Ubisoft Toronto.
Then again, cultural appropriation is not taken all that seriously in Québec, so I can see how they would not have seen it would cause a controversy.

As for historical accuracy, about 50% of the enemy soldiers have been women in the last Far Cry and AC games...

Anyone arguing otherwise is genuinely a mark who's falling for the outright grift.

I have no doubt that there are a tiny, tiny minority fanning the racist flames. For sure, there are.

But I'll say that the vast majority of people who are pissed-off are NOT racist and are just annoyed at Ubisoft's tokenism.

When the original Assassin's Creed was released back in 2007, USA was still bombing the living fuck out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yet no one was protesting at playing as a Muslim hero, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, as he was an appropriate main character for the setting, 12th Century Middle East.

No one protested at Aveline in AC III: Liberation, because she was appropriate for the setting: 19th Century Louisiana.

No one protested at Bayek in AC: Origins because he was appropriate for the setting: 1st Century BC.

Yasuke in 16th Century Japan sticks out like Melody Shreds in a ladies bathroom.

It's also disingenuous to use the white samurai in Nioh as some kind of 'gotcha!'. Nioh doesn't sell itself for it's story, or it's open-worlds, or it's virtual tourism, or historical accuracy like the Assassins Creed games do. It's a Soulsborne-style game.

You'll also note that these dweebs keep using only Nioh as 'proof' of anti-Yasuke racism... because it's just about the only media with a white samurai. The vast, vast, vast majority of anime, manga, games, samurai movies, TV shows only have Japanese leads.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, this whole thing became a mess because a weird white guy was the only person interested in writing fan fiction about a footnote of history. And it went unnoticed because nobody in Japan cared about it until other weird white guys from abroad use it as a jumping off point for their own fan fiction. And now weird white guys on resetera are writing fan fiction about how it's always secretly been a touchstone for the Japanese people. It's Anpanman, then Yasuke, then Detective Conan.

Burka Brigade must be absolute livid reading the replies that thread. Yes, people like to see attractive characters on screen. Obviously, the standards of beauty vary a bit, but generally, people don't like, aesthetically speaking, women with chins so square and chiseled that it'd make Henry Cavil blush. Or women that have a body shape that would impress an NFL linebacker. I'm sure there are people into those sorts of things, as the burka brigade thread shows, but they need to understand that they're in a very small minority.

Honestly the support this statement is getting me is depressing me. Games can only be power fantasies never try to be anything. Chuds are right; women who don't meet the arbitrary standard are allowed in gaming. Larger women, older women, "manly" women or and any women who has any flaws; get lost (which includes me for 3 out of 4 if those). You don't deserve to be represented because no one wants you, you're not liked and you break normal people's power fantasies and escapism (and let's not pretend that these toxic beauty standards don't affect everyone).

And let's us not even pretend Nomura didn't also mean muscly women either or any scarring either given recent games.

I really don't get the impression people here are serious about disdain or malice towards "ugly" people.

I've seen rhetoric pop up too many times, fighting games being especially bad for it (her arse is part of her character) to buy most of it isn't serious. Especially how little you have to be "flawed" to be ugly.

Again, these people find it so hard to consider that what they find attractive is the severe minority. Then they get upset when people naturally express the majority opinion of liking traditionally attractive designs. The world doesn't revolve around you or have to repress their own interests to spare your feelings and inadequacies.
