It's one of the most ambigious parts of the lore because you are fed "fake news" about Big Boss being a terrorist and a warmonger in the games where you play as Solid Snake.

It was the Patriots that believed in perpetual war and the war economy (In fact Zero believed that was the will of the boss). In his view he was protecting soldiers and fighting a defensive war against the Patriots. He stopped fighting when he realized he had finally won even though he could've easily escaped death again.

I think the game paints them as both being ultra wrong.   Both BB and Snake admit that they are addicted to conflict, while knowing is wrong in a fundamental level. 

Hell, my impression is that he died knowing the conflict was kind of useless and got out of control, he even told Snake to enjoy his last years without all the global BS and chasing the half understood wishes of others.

In the end, your comparison is horrible because Trump is not a soldier, he doesn’t mind conflicts (unless it affects him directly), and he thinks using nukes against a tornado is a good idea.
