At the end of the day, no company or industry will be able to compete with a nation state interest with an unlimited wallet because slave labor and numerous other reasons aside, China doesn't operate on the same capitalistic free market principles the US and the rest of the world is behooven to (they call it capitalism with Chinese characteristics). As covered several times, by undercutting the rest of the market, they can push everyone else out and monopolize it. They have most of the world's rare earth materials, the factories and cheap labor to manufacture the cars, batteries, and semiconductors. Countries need to deploy taxes because otherwise their own country's car and job industries would be at risk. Most of the US automotive industry wouldn't even exist today if they weren''t bailed out a couple of decades ago, what makes you think they would be OK with it dying now?

I have been saying for a while that the US should have nationalized US auto companies during the Great Recession and went crazy on EV and renewables manufacturing. That's well and gone, but they could do it now by seizing Tesla from Musk and pushing for it that way.

There won't be any magical 180 flip. Her hesitancy at the direct Netanyahu question here really says it all, she can't bring herself to make the vaguest criticism about a guy who is openly (though I very much doubt privately) defiant like a cackling troll against the very nation that's heavily funding him.
