The DCEU was just not being that good being a darker super hero take, and in the end you could have wacky films like Aquaman and Shazam.

Being fair, Gunn can go pretty dark and contemplative while being zanny and Whedon esque.

Gunn was, with the exception of Thor Ragnarok and the original Iron Man movie, the only one who I felt has pulled it off in the MCU. And in multi-genre works with an ensemble. It is in any case a far better hire than the disaster they did with the last person they imported from the MCU to "improve" a DC product.

edit: I didn't think Aquaman was really too wacky, Arthur (and Mera) is pretty brutal in that movie and the fight scenes fit with the flowing DCEU style in my opinion. It's just got some weird ass looking CGI.
