Unironically pedophile logic, if he actually meant that. No really, if we were to take him at his word, and take his meaning seriously, then that would mean he'd be mentally unable to differentiate literal children from grown adults. This isn't and shouldn't be the only way to gauge success in a creative field, and in fact I'd argue that individual accountability is actively hostile to any sort of risk-taking. Large publishers have the means to support smaller, riskier, bolder projects/imprints while the tentpoles bring in the cash. We saw this with EA and their Originals program, but even teams like BioWare were able to weather the Andromeda/Anthem/Joplin years by leaning on the publisher's cash cows (FIFA, Apex). TakeTwo's Private Division was grounded in similar principles, same goes for Ken Levine's blank check studio.

Unfortunately both publishers have started shying away from these sorts of arrangements more recently, not because they were in the red but because they were looking to juice their overall margins just that little extra bit for shareholders. So this certainly isn't a Sony-specific issue, but rather a more widespread failing to foster an environment conducive to the kinds of projects Japan Studio used to make.

I'd be more accepting of the argument that Japan Studio had some unique/egregious circumstances behind the scenes that culminated in their eventual closure (Mismanagement in the late PS2 era, the rocky transition to HD development, talent exodus, etc). I wouldn't necessarily agree, but I'd accept it. It's just this "X studio was shut down because every employee must produce value, this is good and makes sense" mindset that grinds my gears.

Maybe it's time for you and others to accept that. Because if they were even doing remotely well over time they would still exist like other studios. Sometimes change is good. They birthed Asobi and Xdev Japan out of it.
