The question always comes down to whether or not there's some part of the brain that is gendered and creates the sense of identification with a specific gender; that is the factor for which 'being born in the wrong body' gets its legitimacy.  As far as I know, I *feel* male and know I'm male without external reminders, so I can see a trans person having those wires messed up.  If someone has a "female" brain but a male body, it's none of my business to tell them how they ought to live and present themselves as, nor is it my business to tell them they are wrong or mentally ill for doing it.  It's the external validation that is the issue - to most people, you are not 1:1 a female and will never be.  96.7% of cisgender heterosexual men and 98.2% of cisgender heterosexual women indicated they would not consider romantic or sexual relationships with transgender individuals, and telling them you have a brain with the gender they're attracted to isn't going to change that.  This is the hard reality.  I can't say that trying your darndest to live your life as the gender of your body you were born with is the right way to live your life - you have to figure that out for yourself, but as with all things, trying to find happiness and gratification by fighting against the world around you instead of finding equanimity within yourself, isn't going to go well.  You're probably not going to ever make the world see you as 1:1 the sex you want to present as.  And that's okay.  If you're at the point where you're suicidal because you can't legally go to the bathroom in the gender your brain is calibrated to, there is something off kilter with you, despite it being conventionally unfair.  An unfair world shouldn't destabilize you like that.  Plenty of things in the world are not fair.  There are ways to live and find happiness in the world without demanding others comply with what you feel.
