Start with Horus Rising the beginning of Horus transiting from an angry chud into a mutual aid giving, wlw, trans lesbian. They then got a little bit angry when the Emperor refused to let them join a girl's basketball team and things started to get a little hectic.

Most common recommendations would be Eisenhorn, or Ciaphas Cain if you want something a bit more light-hearted. Night Lords if you want horror. Space Marine stories tend to be a bit dry.
