Controversial opinion but Dragon Age was never an interesting setting/has extremely boring lore. Every subsequent game exposed that more and more, until they had nowhere left to go with Veilguard. Mass Effect is BioWare’s only good original world.

This is just wrong. So many civil rights leaders referred to the struggle of the working class as a whole. Mamdani has literally referred to working class New Yorkers how many damn times in his campaign? He's never thought of anyone who wasn't white!?

This kind of exaggerated righteousness with no basis in reality is part of the reason why progressives and liberal causes have failed to make any political ground in a decade.

I should be clearer: the history of this phrase "working class", when used by conservative and even centrist politicians, and the media that caters to them, is almost always used to isolate the needs of the white lower class as being more valid than that of the Black and Brown lower class, who are then labeled the thugs, and the welfare queens, and the takers, terms that are almost never used to describe white people in the same exact social class.

It's why when you see that phrase in publication, it's almost always attached to a white unionized factory worker in the Midwest, and never the Black mother working at a hair salon in LA.

That's not to say it's only EVER used in that context, and I shouldn't have said that. But despite the efforts of Black and Brown people in activism and politics to reframe it, including Mamdani and going back to Jesse Jackson and even MLK; it is still the case that I'm not the first Black person to say that in many contexts it comes off as a dog whistle, and I likely won't be the last.

for me dragon age's initial hook was partly how elves were different from other fantasy worlds, a subjugated and enslaved people, except for those struggling in the wilderness, and then also the dwarven castes

the initial race selection and starting story was the most interesting thing in DA

I'm ok with boring lore when generic fantasy is kind of what I want, I mean I don't want a boring story but the setting is just a backdrop for interesting things to happen

what makes a game like baldur's gate much better? personally I'd argue just all the extra depth you get from years of a built up universe with hundreds of known spells that can do weird and horrifying things...in a setting like dragon age, every magical thing that happens feels invented on the spot where you're like ok I guess that's a thing now? unlike a D&D setting where it's like ah yep you died and your friends cast reincarnation and you came back as a monster and are shunned by normal people, yeah that'll happen

The early dragon age story universe stuff was kinda gnarly and dark, darker probably than your standard DND bollocks setting and the way the magic system worked was also kinda horror tinged. It was most definitely not a great lesson in the power of friendship and acceptance.

The problem with giving the chuds so much credit is that their boycotts conveniently only seem to work on games that launch with tangible, widely recognized flaws. Veilguard, Star Wars Outlaws, Forspoken, etc. These guys campaign against just about every major release, if the grift was working none of the games they target would be selling.

What we have started to see is publishers prematurely acquiescing to these groups. Ubisoft apparently cancelled that Reformation-era AC in response to the Yasuke backlash before Shadows even released. Which is a shame bc that game would go on to sell quite well despite the noise surrounding it

Just the same, there's a genuine problem here pretending these didn't happen. That there are folks who really don't like this game is not an excuse to ignore it outright. The post I responded to originally quite literally said it had nothing to do with the game's reception and sales. That's nonsense. Searching for Veilguard on YouTube was a complete waste of time during the initial months because of it.

You can say the same with stuff like Pokemon Legends… and still sold like hot cakes.  To the point that Pokefans are “not comfortable” that the negative opinions persist outside the community 

Negativity can also have its own bubbles (Uncle: they invaded the Fallouts!  ) and don’t tell the whole picture, which should made you question how effective are these hypothetical hate campaigns.

I was already on the outs with Dragon Age due to Bioware's white lib centrism hanging out all over the place in Inquisition but Veilguard singlehandedly murdered any love I had left for the series. Like what's even the point of anything I did in the other games if the south is gonna get nuked offscreen. Returning characters are empty shells due to the lack of worldstates. The game was targeted for being "woke" yet is shockingly racist (see above re white lib centrism). As someone who doesn't care about Solas or DA elves all the lore reveals were just like. Of course Solas/the elves did everything bc he is Trick Weekes's specialest little boy. Speaking of Trick Weekes go check out their Escapism panel appearance bc it explains a LOT about why the writing in Veilguard was Like That.
